Düsseldorf, September 2023 - The Hamburg family business Gebr. Heinemann returned to Düsseldorf Airport after a ten-year absence. The Düsseldorf general contractor Schwitzke Project realised four duty-free and travel-value areas in the security area. A shop design was created with a mix of regional and global assortment.

Inspiration: The history of Düsseldorf's old town

The history of Düsseldorf's old town and the city's love for art, urban culture and fashion were taken up in the design. According to the general contractor, the furniture concept should be adaptable to seasonal campaigns and changing brand promotions.

3,700 m2 of retail space was transformed in about 20 weeks. It was a challenge, they say, because one third of the space had to remain open for sales and fully functional at all times. Karl-Heinz Schwoll, Managing Director of Schwitzke Project explained: "To realise four duty-free and travel-value areas at the same time is a challenge that requires very precise and detailed planning. It also requires a motivated, experienced and flexible team. Since both components were given, we were able to successfully implement the project as planned." Schwitzke Project is part of the Schwitzke Group and specialises in brand strategy, architecture and design through to turnkey conversions and extensions.

Gebr. Heinemann is the only family-owned company

In Europe, Gebr. Heinemann is the market leader and the only family-owned company among the global players in the travel-retail industry. According to its own figures, Gebr. Heinemann has around 6,700 employees worldwide and generated group sales of €2.1 billion in 2021.

Gebr. Heinemann was founded in 1879 by Heinrich Christian Carl Heinemann and his brother Carl Friedrich Eduard Heinemann in Hamburg and supplied ship suppliers with tobacco products and spirits, which were duty-free at the time. From the 1950s onwards, they also supplied the new duty-free shops on ships and later airlines such as Lufthansa from 1954. When duty and tax-free shopping for travel within the EU was abolished in 1999, Gebr. Heinemann renamed its shops Travel Value.
