Art Calendar, 1 March 2023: In the early 1950s, two young aspiring actors came to New York to fulfil their lifelong dream of performing on stage. Shortly after in 1953, Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman were cast in the Broadway production of William Inge's "Picnic", which became the beginning of a decades-long romance and cemented the stars as Hollywood's "Golden Couple". Four years later, the two teamed up again for The Long, Hot Summer - a time Paul Newman recalled in his recently published memoir The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Summer "Joanne and I could do what we longed for years to do in public, as well as put on screen what had already been discovered between us. There was a glue that held us together then, and through the rest of our life together. And that glue was this: anything seemed possible. The good, the bad, and the wonderful. With all other people, some things were possible, but not everything. For us, the promise of everything was there from the beginning."

An art and Hollywood highlight is sure to be Sotheby's June auction The World of Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, which will provide a glimpse into the personal lives of the stars, offering a retrospective and access into the couple's exciting yet exclusive world that took place out of the limelight.

Highlights of the June auctions, consisting of more than 300 individual items, include: Signed screenplays, awards, props and wardrobe, from the likes of The Colour of Money. A large selection of automotive and racing memorabilia - a passion of Paul Newman's that inspired him into old age - and the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Politician and presidential memorabilia, including signed letters and photographs from Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. But also a selection of personal items, including Joanne Woodwards' wedding dress and ring from her marriage to Paul Newman in 1958, as well as art and 18th-century American and English furniture from their Connecticut residences, and more.
