What does an artist feel when he paints?

For Löwentraut, painting feels like flying. Together with students from Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences, the star artist developed the spatial experience "Volar", where visitors can experience this feeling in analogue and digital form.

---

"volar" (Spanish: to fly) - is a spatial installation that was created in collaboration with the master class of the "Virtual Design" degree programme at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences as well as professors Matthias Pfaff and Christian Schmachtenberg and Leon Löwentraut. The 24-year-old artist had a teaching assignment at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences during the winter semester 21/22. The topic: "Future Exhibition Design".

In addition to the volar installation, other works by Leon Löwentraut will be shown - including sculptures, charcoal drawings and acrylic paintings from his current series "Landscapes".

Background:

Löwentraut painted the work in question in the Virtual Lab at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences. And the students documented the genesis of the painting. Via motion capture (known from animated films), Löwentraut's movements were recorded while painting, microphones recorded the sounds on the canvas and measurements of the brain waves make it "visible" how Löwentraut gets into a "flow" during the creative process: these invisible data of the artwork as well as the emotionality of the artist are made accessible in the exhibition.

A twin of the painting from the 3D printer reproduces the surface structure of Löwentraut's painting and may be touched. The touches start a video projection, the image builds up as captured by the motion capture recordings. You can hear the transpositions of the brainwave measurements, the sounds of brushes and palette knives on the canvas, the music that was playing while painting.

Professor Christian Schmachtenberg says: "Our goal is to develop intelligent staging formats for the art sector. We make analogue art more 'tangible' with digital possibilities, thus reducing inhibitions and making creative processes more comprehensible."

"With our work, we have helped to open up horizons in which art and science merge in unusual ways to make the creative process accessible to the viewer and the artist themselves," emphasises Dr Martine Hoffmann, Head of Research at the National Institute for Applied Gerontology, Training and Research (RBS Centre for Ageing) in Luxembourg and responsible for measuring Leon Löwentraut's brain waves.
