Art, 16 October 2023: For the latest Square Print Sale, photographers from around the world explore what photography means to them in the age of artificial intelligence. To do so, Magnum Photos is partnering with the World Press Photo Foundation for its next Square Print Sale: Written by Light, taking place this week (16-22 October).

Inspired by the growing number of conversations about the use of artificially generated images online and the lack of regulation of text-image generators, the curation for this sale - consisting of one image from each participating photographer or estate - aims to celebrate the fundamental difference between the practice of these photographers and AI-generated images: the use of light.

On display will be more than 75 Magnum photographers and estates from a further 30 World Press Photo award-winning photographers. Together they aim to celebrate the medium of photography through a collaborative curation of over 100 images. Magnum Photos and World Press Photo will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
