In a travelling art exhibition initiated by the Brost Foundation, the latest works of art by Germany's most important cabaret artist, Dieter Nuhr, will be presented. Artistically designed photographs reflect the world as he perceived it in the Ruhr region. Only a few weeks ago, Alethea & Art Magazine received an interview from the artist on the occasion of his exhibition Reisezeit - Zeitreisen Reisezeit in the Düsseldorf Porzellanmuseum.

The exhibition Von Fernen umgeben at the Museum Osthaus Hagen, directed by Dr Tayfun Belgin, includes a selection of paintings in which he processes his travels through almost a hundred countries. Juxtaposed are works in which the artist picks up on his personal closeness to the Ruhr region. The idea of an international, non-commercial touring exhibition grew out of this contrast.

The artist wants to process his travels in his pictures but not filter out messages or make theses and jokes - he says about the exhibition that he himself could not put into words what he experienced on his travels and therefore expresses himself artistically. Indeed, his paintings always have something poetic, dreamlike.

After studying art at the University of Essen, the former Folkwang School, Dieter Nuhr never stopped producing pictures. For him, visual art was and is always a central part of his artistic self-image. 

Dieter Nuhr's visual art has changed over the years: In the 1990s, he put brushes and oil paint aside and began working on digital images and photographs. In the process, he programmes digital brushes that overlay the original photograph in several steps and layers of colour. In this way, Nuhr isolates motifs from landscape or architecture in different degrees of abstraction. What is photographed loses itself, dissolves, only to be reconstructed in a painterly process. For Dieter Nuhr, a picture is a surface for reflection: "It is an occasion for conscious perception and association. What the viewer takes away from the picture and what thoughts he develops is up to him. Art is always a suggestion."

His artworks are in important collections and are shown internationally in museums, galleries and at art fairs, including the Jinan Biennale, the Shanghai Photography Art Exhibition and the Luxehills Art Museum Chengdu in China.

With "Nuhr im Ersten", Nuhr recently regularly reached around two million people. His satirical review of the year 2021 was watched by around 3.5 million viewers. His intensive work as a visual artist, on the other hand, flourishes more in obscurity.

Subsequently, Von Fernen umgeben can be seen at the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana Venice from 01.09 to 29.09.2022. The exhibition series is a cooperation between the Association for Art in Public, Dirk Geuer Düsseldorf and the Brost Foundation.

The Folkwang Museum opened its doors in the Westphalian industrial town of Hagen in the summer of 1902. It owed its foundation to a wealthy man with an appreciation of art: Karl Ernst Osthaus. In einer von der Brost-Stiftung initiierten Wanderkunstausstellung werden die neuesten Kunstwerke von Deutschlands bedeutendstem Kabarettisten, Dieter Nuhr vorgestellt. Künstlerisch gestaltete Fotografien spiegeln die Welt, wie er sie im Ruhrgebiet empfunden hat. Vor nur wenigen Wochen hatte Alethea & Art Magazine anlässlich seiner Ausstellung Reisezeit - Zeitreisen im Düsseldorfer Porzellanmuseum ein Interview vom Künstler erhalten.

Die Ausstellung im Museum Osthaus Hagen, geleitet von Dr. Tayfun Belgin, umfasst eine Auswahl von Bildern, in denen er seine Reisen durch fast hundert Länder verarbeitet. Gegenübergestellt sind Werke, in denen der Künstler die persönliche Nähe zum Ruhrgebiet aufgreift. Aus diesem Kontrast wuchs die Idee einer internationalen, nicht-kommerziellen Wanderausstellung.

Der Künstler möchte in seinen Bildern seine Reisen verarbeiten aber keine Botschaften herausfiltern oder Thesen und Witze machen - er sagt zur Ausstellung, dass er selbst nicht in Worte fassen könnte, was er auf seinen Reisen erlebt habe und drücke sich daher künstlerisch aus. In der Tat haben seine Bilder immer etwas Poetisches, Traumhaftes.

Nach seinem Kunststudium an der Universität Essen, der ehemaligen Folkwangschule, hörte Dieter Nuhr nie auf, Bilder zu produzieren. Für ihn war und ist die Bildende Kunst immer ein zentraler Teil seines künstlerischen Selbstverständnisses. 

Dieter Nuhrs bildende Kunst hat sich im Laufe der Jahre gewandelt: In den 90er Jahren legte er Pinsel und Ölfarbe beiseite und begann mit der Arbeit an digitalen Bildern und Fotografien. Dabei programmiert er digitale Pinsel, die in mehreren Schritten und Farbschichten das ursprüngliche Foto überlagern. So isoliert Nuhr Motive aus Landschaft oder Architektur in unterschiedlichen Abstraktionsgraden. Das Fotografierte verliert sich, löst sich auf, um dann in einem malerischen Prozess neu konstruiert zu werden. Für Dieter Nuhr ist ein Bild eine Reflexionsfläche: „Es ist Anlass zum bewussten Wahrnehmen und Assoziieren. Was der Betrachter aus dem Bild mitnimmt und was er für Gedanken entwickelt, bleibt ihm überlassen. Kunst ist immer ein Vorschlag.“

Seine Kunstwerke befinden sich in bedeutenden Sammlungen und werden international in Museen, Galerien und auf Kunstmessen gezeigt, unter anderem auf der Jinan Biennale, der Shanghai Photography Art Exhibition und im Luxehills Art Museum Chengdu in China.

Mit „Nuhr im Ersten“ erreichte Nuhr zuletzt regelmäßig etwa zwei Millionen Menschen. Seinen satirischen Jahresrückblick 2021 verfolgten rund 3,5 Millionen Zuschauer. Seine intensive Arbeit als bildender Künstler blüht dagegen eher im Verborgenen.
