Freedom of the press: Memorial to fallen journalists in Amsterdam and a list

Nov 2024: Freedom of expression and freedom of the press are more important and endangered than ever. In April, we reported on the presentation of the World Press Photo Award in Amsterdam, an annual competition held in De Nieuwe Kerk under the patronage of Prince Constantijn and in the presence of Touria Meliani, Amsterdam's Alderwoman for Culture. In a side room of the exhibition was a small room next to the Photo of the Year by Mohammed Salem, in which the names and photos of the fallen journalists were displayed. It is the Foundation's co-operation with the Committee to Protect Journalists, CPJ, which has been keeping a list of journalists killed in the line of duty since 1992, and which includes journalism legends such as Christiane Amanpour, Tom Brokaw and Arianna Huffington.

The English investigative journalist, podcaster and filmmaker Andrew Gold has published his first book, ‘The Psychology of Secrets’, published by Pan McMillan. Gold reaches millions of viewers with his YouTube channel, more than some daily newspapers. He is aware of his position and responsibility, says Gold in a personal interview, and is frank about his responsibility in social media and that of his many colleagues. Incidentally, he finds the current role of social media controversial due to the frequent lack of research, the lack of due diligence and the spread of fake news.

Freedom of the press

Often the subject of controversy, Gold's YouTube channel ‘Heretic’ is primarily dedicated to freedom of the press.
