Interview on the occasion of Dieter Nuhr's Von Fernen umgeben at the Osthaus Hagen

Dr Tayfun Belgin is the museum director of the Osthaus Hagen in Hagen, Westphalia. His museum has been in the media several times this year because of star artists such as Sylvester Stallone, Bryan Adams and now Germany's most famous cabaret artist, Dieter Nuhr, all of whom are also outstanding artists. But the museum is very much in the tradition of its founder, Karl Ernst Osthaus, of showing "hot art" and exhibits not only stars but also artists newly discovered by Dr Belgin that no German museum has yet exhibited.

Osthaus Hagen was founded in 1902 by Karl Ernst Osthaus and was initially called the Folkwang Museum. The art-minded industrialist heir not only bought new Düsseldorf painters for his museum and works by Paul Signac, Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Auguste Rodin, but he also set up a painting school for the Düsseldorf painters to ease their financial burden.

Alethea Magazine met Dr Tayfun Belgin on 2 May 2022 in Hagen on the occasion of Dieter Nuhr's exhibition, Von Fernen umgeben. Dieter Nuhr is actually a studied artist and only embarked on a stage career by chance. Dr Tayfun Belgin was fascinated by his artwork - travel photos painted with digital painting. Alethea Magazine also learned why Dr Tayfun Belgin considers Dieter Nuhr's work to be relevant to art history, how he "discovered" the artist and how he manages to ensure that his museum holds a special place in the German museum landscape, in keeping with the founder's tradition of discovering new art.

In general, what is the significance of digital painting that it has found a place in the Osthaus Hagen? By the way, the exhibition Von Fernen umgeben is a travelling exhibition that will go to Venice from 1 September 2022, to the Palazzo of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana as part of the Biennale.

Dr Tayfun Belgin: For me, photography is an important medium in contemporary art, and has been for 30 years, alongside painting, sculpture and installations. Photography has also changed from analogue to digital - that is, from different technical possibilities and thus different artists working.

I got to know Dieter Nuhr's works a few years ago in a gallery and found his work exciting. But we as a museum have to keep our distance and wait a few years before making a decision. When I finally visited his studio in an old factory in Düsseldorf, I was thrilled by his large works of art that emphasise the distant nature of his travels - and also by the fact that he reorganises photos taken decades before and brings in new formal criteria.

We also waited for the right time today - the opening of the exhibition is on 7 May at 4 p.m. and in the evening at 8 p.m. he will be performing in the Stadthalle Hagen - an exciting coincidence. The double genius - you can touch the artist in our museum and experience him at a distance on stage in the evening.

Alethea & Art Magazine: Where does Osthaus Hagen actually stand in the German museum landscape?

Dr Tayfun Belgin: Well, I don't worry about that at all - I try to stage things in the museum that others don't do. I don't take part in actions where artists are pushed back and forth like in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt or Berlin. My programme focuses on figurative art, but I also exhibit abstract art. I always try to keep up with the spirit of the times and not show works that have already been shown a thousand times. 

We will soon be exhibiting a Russian artist by whom we already have two works in our collection and whom no German museum has ever exhibited before, as well as an Armenian artist who has also never been shown before. It's all in the tradition of Karl Ernst Osthaus, who exhibited "hot" art - artists he had discovered himself.

Alethea & Art Magazine: But how can a museum, especially one that is somewhat removed from the metropolises, attract visitors and what is ultimately the key to success for a museum director?

Dr Tayfun Belgin: First of all, clearly enthusiasm, which must carry you even in difficult times, because of course we are also subject to demands from politics or criticism. Unfortunately, we have a lot of bureaucracy and I have to spend 80% of my time at the computer. The rest of my time is spent visiting studios or travelling to see art. 

Then expertise in art, especially contemporary art, is needed. 

Another important element that accounts for 50% of success is having the right network - a museum like Osthaus Hagen depends on sponsors for many exhibitions.

Interview anlässlich Dieter Nuhr’s Von Fernen umgeben im Osthaus Hagen

Dr. Tayfun Belgin ist Museumsdirektor des Osthaus Hagen im westfälischen Hagen. Sein Museum war in diesem Jahr bereits mehrfach in den Medien aufgrund von Star Künstlern wie Sylvester Stallone, Bryan Adams und nunmehr auch der bekannteste deutsche Kabarettist, Dieter Nuhr, die allesamt auch herausragende Künstler sind. Aber das Museum steht ganz in der Tradition seines Gründers Karl Ernst Osthaus, „heisse Kunst“ zu zeigen und stellt nicht nur Stars aus, sondern auch Künstler, die Dr. Belgin neuentdeckt hat, die noch kein deutsches Museum ausgestellt hat.

Osthaus Hagen wurde 1902 von Karl Ernst Osthaus gegründet und hiess zunächst Folkwang Museum. Der kunstsinnige Industriellen Erbe kaufte für sein Museum nicht nur neue Düsseldorfer Maler ein und Werke von Paul Signac, Auguste Renoir, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin und Auguste Rodin, sondern er errichtete den Düsseldorfer Malern eine Malschule, um ihnen die finanzielle Last zu nehmen.

Alethea Magazine traf Dr. Tayfun Belgin am 2. Mai 2022 in Hagen anlässlich der Ausstellung von Dieter Nuhr, Von Fernen umgeben. Dieter Nuhr ist eigentlich studierter Künstler und schlug nur durch einen Zufall eine Bühnenlaufbahn ein. Dr. Tayfun Belgin war fasziniert von seinen Kunstwerken - Reisefotos bemalt mit digitaler Malerei. Alethea Magazine erfuhr auch, weshalb Dr. Tayfun Belgin das Werk von Dieter Nuhr für kunstgeschichtlich relevant hält, wie er den Künstler „entdeckt“ hat und wie er es schafft, dass sein Museum in der deutschen Museenlandschaft einen besonderen Platz innehält, ganz in der Tradition des Gründers, neue Kunst zu entdecken.

Überhaupt - welche Bedeutung kommt der digitaler Malerei zu, dass sie einen Platz im Osthaus Hagen findet? Die Ausstellung Von Fernen umgeben ist übrigens eine Wanderausstellung, die ab dem 1. September 2022 nach Venedig geht und zwar in den Palazzo der Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana im Rahmen der Biennale.

Dr. Tayfun Belgin: Für mich ist Fotografie in der aktuellen Kunst, und dies bereits seit 30 Jahren, ein wichtiges Medium neben der Malerei, Skulpturen und Installationen.  

Auch die Fotografie hat sich gewandelt von der analogen bis hin zur digitalen Fotografie - also von verschiedenen technischen Möglichkeiten und somit verschieden arbeitenden Künstlern.

Ich lernte Dieter Nuhr’s Werke vor einigen Jahren in einer Galerie kennen und fand sein Werk spannend. Wir als Museum müssen aber Abstand haben und ein paar Jahre warten, bis wir eine Entscheidung treffen. Als ich schließlich sein Atelier in einer alten Fabrik in Düsseldorf besuchte, begeisterten mich seine grossen Kunstwerke, die das Ferne seiner Reisen betonen - und auch dass er Fotos, die Jahrzehnte zuvor gemacht hat, neugestaltet und neue formale Kriterien hineinbringt.

Wir haben heute auch den richtigen Zeitpunkt abgewartet - die Eröffnung der Ausstellung ist am 7. Mai um 16.00 Uhr und Abends um 20.00 Uhr tritt er in der Stadthalle Hagen auf - eine spannende Koinzidenz. Das Doppel Genie - sie können den Künstler bei uns im Museum anfassen und Abends auf der Bühne in Distanz erleben.

Alethea & Art Magazine: Wo steht das Osthaus Hagen eigentlich in der deutschen Museumslandschaft?

Dr. Tayfun Belgin: Also, darüber mache ich mir überhaupt keine Gedanken - ich versuche, im Museum Dinge zu inszenieren, die andere nicht tun. Ich beteilige mich nicht an Aktionen, an denen Künstler hin und her geschoben werden wie in Köln, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt oder Berlin. Mein Programm sieht vor, dass ich schwerpunktmässig figürliche Kunst ausstelle, aber auch abstrakte Kunst. 

Ich versuche stets, den Zeitgeist mitzunehmen und nicht Arbeiten zu zeigen, die schon tausendmal gezeigt wurden. 

In Kürze werden wir einen russischen Künstler ausstellen, von dem wir bereits 2 Werke in unserer Sammlung haben und den nie zuvor ein deutsches Museum ausgestellt hat sowie einen armenischen Künstler, der auch noch nie gezeigt wurde.

Alles geht ganz in der Tradition von Karl Ernst Osthaus, der „heisse“ Kunst ausstellte - Künstler, die er selbst entdeckt hatte.

Alethea & Art Magazine: Doch wie kann ein Museum, vor allem eines, das etwas entfernt von den Metropolen liegt, Besucher anziehen und was ist letztlich der Schlüssel zum Erfolg eines Museumsdirektors?

Dr. Tayfun Belgin: Zunächst ganz klar Begeisterung, die einen tragen muss auch in schweren Zeiten, denn wir unterliegen natürlich auch Forderungen aus der Politik oder Kritik. Wir haben leider sehr viel Bürokratie und 80 % meiner Zeit muss ich am Computer verbringen. Im Rest meiner Zeit besuche ich Ateliers oder reise, um Kunst zu sehen. 

Dann ist Expertise in der Kunst, vor allem in der zeitgenössischen Kunst, gefragt. 

Ein weiteres wichtiges Element, das 50 % des Erfolges ausmacht, ist, über ein entsprechendes Netzwerk zu verfügen - ein Museum wie das Osthaus Hagen ist bei vielen Ausstellungen auf Sponsoren angewiesen.
