On the occasion of Heinz Mack's 90th birthday, the Düsseldorf gallery Geuer & Geuer presents the exhibition: Heinz Mack - "Die Architektur der Farbe (The Architecture of Colour) - Vernissage with the ZERO artist in Düsseldorf

His experimental light reliefs have made him famous. With the ZERO group he became famous worldwide. From Friday, 5 November 2021, the Düsseldorf gallery Geuer & Geuer Art, which has worked closely with Heinz Mack for years, will present new and exclusive works by the artist on the occasion of his 90th birthday this year. In the exhibition entitled "Heinz Mack. The Architecture of Colour", a large number of collages by the artist that have not yet been shown in any museum institution in the world will be presented. The predominantly medium-sized to small-format collages made of hand-painted handmade paper were primarily created between 2017 and 2020.

Mack, who sees his colourful works as "mirror images of (his) inner sensations", also explores his central themes of light and structure in these works. The colour fields, which Mack has previously covered with luminous pigment paint, are cut out and glued on top of or to each other, reminiscent of his famous Chromatic Constellations, which he has been painting constantly since 1991. The only difference is that the colour fields of his collages appear more striking and architectural because of their cut edges.

Inspired by ornamentation with geometric patterns, especially from the Arab and African regions, Heinz Mack is concerned with light and shadow in his objectless paintings. In their abstraction, these unfold a poetry all of their own. Characteristic of Mack's art are the radiant colour spaces and contrasting surfaces he creates. The multiple documenta participant does not use colour as a material, but as an active component of an intuitive painting process. In his collages, the focus is rather on the playful process of arranging the elements: as in a building, here the pictorial architecture, consisting of individual colour fields, is assembled layer by layer into a harmonious whole.

The exhibition will run until 5 December 2021. On the occasion of the exhibition, a catalogue will be published with a detailed interview that Valeria Maria Mack, Heinz Mack's daughter, conducted with the artist about his collages.

HEINZ MACK:

In 1957, together with Otto Piene, Heinz Mack founded the famous and internationally influential artist group ZERO in Düsseldorf, which was joined by Günther Uecker in 1961. Spectacular, experimental art actions are characteristic of the ZERO period and its protagonists. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York opened a ZERO exhibition in October 2014, which was shown in 2015 in the Martin-Gropius-Bau (Berlin), the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and the Sakip Sabanci Museum (Istanbul). Heinz Mack's central artistic theme is light. His experimental light reliefs and his light installations in the desert have attracted particular attention.

His works have been made accessible to the public in over 300 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions. His works are represented in 140 public collections.

Mack has also created numerous sculptures for public spaces (including Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Stuttgart, Cologne, Münster, Osnabrück), is a documenta participant and represented Germany at the Venice Biennale in 1970.
