LAWRENCE SCHILLER. MARILYN & I
BY TASCHEN
Just a few months before her death, Marilyn Monroe helped a young photographer get his big break - and this is his story
"You're already famous, now you're going to make me famous," photographer Lawrence Schiller told Marilyn Monroe when they talked about the photos he was going to shoot of her. "Don't be so conceited," Marilyn replied, "photographers are easily replaced." In 1962 Lawrence Schiller had been commissioned by Paris Match magazine to photograph Marilyn Monrie. He already knew Marilyn - they had met on the set of Let's Make Love - but nothing could have prepared him for the day she appeared nude in a swimming pool scene for the feature film Something's Got to Give.
"Marilyn & Me" is the intimate story of a legend before her fall and a young photographer on her way to the top. Schiller's original texts and photographs - more than two-thirds of which have never or rarely been published - take the reader back to that time and to the surprising connection that Marilyn had with Lawrence Schiller. It is a story that has never been told before, told with tact, humour and compassion. The result is a genuine and unexpected portrait that captures the star in the midst of her final struggle.
