Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

is one of the greatest geniuses of all time. His works are still an integral part of our culture even our everyday life: The Vitruvian Man has been embossed on millions of euro coins, The Last Supper is considered one of the most reproduced religious paintings of all time, and the mysterious Gioconda (Mona Lisa) has captivated countless artists and observers for centuries.

Taschen has updated its XL monograph to offer the most complete overview to date of the life and work of the painter, sculptor, architect, scientist, and inventor. The catalogue raisonné includes all paintings. The illustrated book is characterized by full-page details and excellent print quality, in which even the finest facets of the brushstrokes can be seen en détail.

The catalog of nearly 700 drawings is organized by category (anatomy, architecture, cartography, technology, etc.) and highlights Leonardo's powers of observation, from anatomical studies to complex architectural plans to portraits.

For the new edition, Frank Zöllner has written a preface in which he takes into account the latest scientific findings on Leonardo's work, as well as critically examining the much-discussed work of the Salvator Mundi, whose auction achieved the record sum of around 400 million euros. Numerous illustrations have been replaced by new photographs.

The authors

Frank Zöllner has been Professor of Medieval and Modern Art History at the University of Leipzig since 1996. He has published XL monographs on Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo with TASCHEN.

Johannes Nathan is the author of numerous studies in art history and, in addition to his work as director of Nathan Fine Art (Berlin/Zurich), is regularly involved in teaching art history (currently at the TU Berlin).
