Novi Sad is one of the first cities outside the European Union to be declared European Capital of Culture. It is thus one of 60 cities to hold this title, promoting the richness of diversity and interculturality.

Novi Sad is a city of 340,000 inhabitants, located 75 km northwest of Belgrade on the Danube River. It is the capital of Vojvodina the cultural and economic center, university and fair city.

In 1748, Novi Sad (Neusatz) became a free royal city by a charter of Maria Theresa and from then on it was considered the center of Serbian culture and politics in the then Hungary. At that time it was also called the "Serbian Athens".

Program "For New Bridges

The main idea of the program "For New Bridges" is to leave Novi Sad a lasting legacy that will improve the cultural life of the city.

As part of the preparations for the European Capital of Culture, 40,000 square meters were built and reconstructed in Novi Sad and its surroundings. The old town of Novi Sad was also renovated after almost 300 years.

The suburbium of the Petrovaradin fortress was given a new face, while preserving its rich tradition. After two centuries, the former factory for silk dyeing in the Almaš district became the factory for cultural content (Svilara CS). The Creative Quarter is currently being built on the site of the city's former industrial area.

Doček

The opening ceremony took place on January 13, 2022 in the framework of Doček. Doček celebrates two New Year's Eve, two dates and two ways of calculating time, and celebrates the interculturality Novi Sad is known for, exactly in the time when the different ethnic communities celebrate their holidays. 352 days later, also within the framework of Doček, Novi Sad will symbolically close the title year on December 31, 2022.

PROGRAM CONCEPT

The program concept of the project "Novi Sad - European Capital of Culture" is based on the slogan "For New Bridges", which stands for the idea of building new bridges of cooperation and exchange between artists and organizations from Novi Sad and Serbia, as well as the European cultural scene.

The bridges are divided into program arcs, of which there will be a total of eight in 2022:

31 January to 16 January

DOČEK

It is a unique celebration in Europe: two New Year's Eve celebrations, two days, two ways of counting time, two alphabets and two forms of art. Doček emphasizes the intercultural identity of Novi Sad through cultural heritage and contemporary practice. During the title year, among other programs, Doček will present large multimedia exhibitions inspired by energy and time, for example, by artists Nikola Tesla and Milutin Milanković.

February 1 - March 20

WALKS

This program arc looks at population movement as an inspiration for art and reminds us of the positive effects of migrations and interpenetration. One of the main events will be "Soul Migration," a unique literary pavilion that combines visual and performing arts.

THE FUTURE OF EUROPE

Children will be encouraged and involved in shaping a better future for Europe through culture and the arts.

Heroines are its national figures such as Mileva Marić Einstein, Marija Trandafil, Milica Stojadinović Srpkinja and Milica Tomić. Inspired by this, there will be exhibitions, plays, concerts.

June 17 - July 17

FORTRESS OF PEACE

Here, with the help of theory and art, one would like to devote oneself to coming to terms with the war. Some of the programs, such as Requiem, will honor the victims of the war, while Eutopia will lead to new models of coexistence in Europe.

July 22 - August 21

This is a presentation of the cultural heritage of the Danube Sea. There will be a riverside pavilion and a Danube wedding as a program item.

July 22 to August 21

KALEIDOSCOPE OF CULTURE

Various programs will turn the city into a kaleidoscope.

October 8 to November 27

OTHERS? EUROPE

This program item will present a variety of alternative, minority and avant-garde genres, languages and concepts, such as groups like Superpowered.

NETWORK OF CULTURAL STATIONS

The Network of Cultural Stations represents a unique model for culture in this part of Europe and is one of the most important legacies of the European Capital of Culture project. These spaces are located outside the center of Novi Sad and are used as the main mechanism for decentralization of culture. The cultural stations are based on the principles of citizen participation, openness to authors in the field of culture, and accessibility for people with disabilities. Currently, there are a total of eight cultural stations: Svilara, Egység, Barka, Bukovac, Mlin, Rumenka, Liman and the mobile cultural station Caravan. It is planned to build and reconstruct other objects for cultural purposes.

At the end of the Capital of Culture year, a new cultural infrastructure should be available to the inhabitants of the city.In the city, it is hoped that new doors will open towards the European Union. That new relationships can be established through art and culture.

News about events will be communicated up to date
