SALVADOR DALÍ:

THE IMPOSSIBLE COLLECTION

Text by Paul Moorhouse

"There is only one difference between a madman and me.

The madman thinks he is sane. I know I am mad."

-Salvador Dalí

Probably no other artist's work is as well known as Salvador Dalí's. To some, he is the ultimate mad artist whose unique vision relentlessly plumbed his own psychological depths.

His nightmarish visions and bizarre landscapes express the anxiety and turbulence of the 20th century. Dalí's creativity encompassed many different forms of expression and was never confined to one particular style. Over eight decades, Dalís worked in every conceivable medium, from painting and drawing to sculpture, film, furniture, books, stage design and jewellery. Also to be noted was his highly eccentric public persona, which could be considered an art form in its own right.

Selected by curator and art historian Paul Moorhouse, Assouline presents Salvador Dalí: The Impossible Collection, which focuses on 100 works by this extraordinary creative mind and explores Dalí's inspirations and influences, from Old Masters to Realism, Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism and experimental approaches that explore his obsessions with religion, science and stereoscopy.

Paul Moorhouse is a London-based art historian and curator. Currently Managing Director of the Anthony Caro Studio, he was Senior Curator and Head of Exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, London (2005-17) and Senior Curator at the Tate (1985-2005), where he was instrumental in the founding of Tate Modern and Tate Britain.

He has curated numerous international exhibitions and published widely, including books and exhibition catalogues on major modern and contemporary artists, including Anthony Caro, Salvador Dalí, Alberto Giacometti, Howard Hodgkin, Hans Hofmann, Richard Long, Gerhard Richter, Bridget Riley, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol.
