WATERLICHT returns to the Netherlands after its world tour. WATERLICHT is artist Daan Roosegaarde's dreamscape visualizing the power and poetry of water. The virtual flood shows the vulnerability of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Loevestein Castle and draws attention to rising sea levels as a result of climate change. In support of the United Nations World Water Day mission, the new film WATERLIGHT also launches today.

The Netherlands is inextricably linked to water, with almost a third of the country lying below sea level, and the dikes and dunes are an important part of Dutch culture. Yet life below sea level is sometimes taken for granted.

The installation WATERLICHT is a combination of LEDs and lenses that create a changing virtual tide influenced by wind and rain. The artwork creates a collective experience that reminds viewers of the importance of water innovation and the impact of climate change. The film premiere of WATERLICHT can be seen today, on the United Nations World Water Day, at:

Loevestein Castle

Loevestein Castle and its inhabitants have been struggling with and against water for over seven centuries. Many people know Loevestein Castle through the spectacular escape of the Danish humanist and intellectual Hugo de Groot in a book box. At Loevestein Castle he developed new ideas about peace, freedom and justice that would change the world.

Podcast

A podcast has also been released where listeners can learn about the dangers and potential of water with contributions from Daan Roosegaarde (artist), Kathleen Ferrier (chair of the Dutch Unesco Commission), Jessica den Outer (expert on the rights of nature), Susan Lammers (executive director of the Dutch Heritage Agency) and Henk Ovink (special representative for international water issues).
