Art & Travel, 11 October 2023:

Pre-Christmas magic

If you're planning a trip to England, we have a wonderful recommendation for you. The beautiful wild botanical gardens of Wakehurst will be hosting Wild Glow for the tenth year. At the heart of the gardens is a historic Elizabethan manor house, currently wrapped in one of the UK's greatest outdoor artworks. It is a tradition to light up the park in the South East of England with thousands of paper lanterns and light installations by artists to bring Christmas magic and wonder to the park. The 2023 Winter Lantern Walk is an important Christmas event in the English calendar. The 2023 celebrations are intended to represent a decade of fascinating memories and community spirit.

More than 1000 handmade lanterns

The theme is designed to invite visitors to reflect on the awe-inspiring moments in nature - from examples of wildlife to details of plants and fungi. As befits Glow Wild, more than 1000 lanterns have been handmade by local volunteers and the mile-long trail, created to celebrate the event's tenth anniversary, also features eight new installations by artists. The route also features the UK's tallest living Christmas tree, 37m high and decorated with 1800 energy-saving bulbs.

And what is the programme in 2023?

- One of the UK's largest outdoor art installations, Planet Wakehurst by Catherine Nelson, will come to life through a series of projections by Colour Project and a fire carpet by And:Now

- Giant illuminated whale with 3m high tail by OGE Group, made in collaboration with CameliaBotnar Foundation metalwork apprentices

- A sea of stars and thunderclouds by Same Sky celebrate the vastness of the sky

- Brockman & Page's woven tree forms the mother for 17 'offspring', all handmade by local schools

- Kerith Ogden's "It's a small world" series of tiny villages and Michelle Dufaur's seahorse lanterns

- The UK's tallest living Christmas tree rings in the festive season: 37m high and decorated with 1800 energy-saving bulbs.

In view of the cost of living crisis, Wakehurst has released tickets for the opening week of Glow Wild at £11.50 and up. Children under the age of 4 pay no admission.
