A new luxury brand/artist collaboration has now resulted in a quite extraordinary line of suitcases.

24 June 2022: British cult label Globetrotter, worn from HM Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Churchill to Daniel Craig, Eddie Redmayne and Kate Moss, has chosen the drawings of British word artist David Shrigley for its limited edition collection.

The result is a limited edition that features David Shrigley's original artwork on the outside of the 4-wheel carry-on suitcases. The first case is adorned with a blue horse and a David Shrigley quote "BE AN ASS". The second variation features a blue trolley and the quote "I HAVE SOME BAGGAGE, BUT IT`S NOT MUCH OF A PROBLEM."

The case has an ivory vulcanised fibre top and cobalt blue corners studded with brass rivets that can give the appearance of a picture frame.

"One of the things I like most about these designs is that they are really just the wrong colour."

In an interview with Globe-Trotter, the artist confessed that he was fascinated by the designs because they were all the wrong colour. David Shrigley was allowed to choose the colour and texture himself and then decided on cream, a colour he felt was decadent for a commercial piece of luggage. So he put together the suitcase design to make it an impractical piece of art luggage. 

Then he chose the statements: "One referred to the luggage itself as a metaphor, the other statement was to be more oblique". When asked about the wording, David Shrigley said, "I'm interested in metaphors and oblique statements that you can project your own meaning onto. My designs are not crossword puzzles with only one solution - depending on the context, the meaning changes too."

David Shrigley is approached by many brands for collaborations, but chose Globe-Trotter, "as much of what they do is limited edition, which appeals to me as an artist, as what I do is inevitably unique or small edition."

David Shrigley is a British artist whose rudimentary but distinctive line work serves to observe his surroundings with irony, often accompanied by an absurd and irreverent phrase.

The humour - whether naïve or noir is used with great precision. David Shrigley is best known for his distinctive drawing style and his works in which he satirically comments on everyday situations and human interactions.

Eine neue Luxusmarken/Künstler Kooperation hat jetzt zu einer ganz aussergewöhnlichen Kofferlinie geführt.

24. Juni 2022: Das britische Kult-Label Globetrotter, das von HM Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Winston Churchill bis hin zu Daniel Craig, Eddie Redmayne and Kate Moss getragen wird hat die Zeichnungen des britischen Wort Künstlern David Shrigley für seine Koffer gewählt.

Entstanden ist eine limitierte Edition, bei der die Original-Kunstwerke von David Shrigley auf der Außenseite der 4-Rad-Carry-On-Koffer präsentiert werden. Der erste Koffer wird von einem blauen Pferd geziert und einem David Shringley Zitat „BE AN ASS“. Die zweite Variation zeigt einen blauen Trolley und das Zitat „I HAVE SOME BAGGAGE, BUT IT`S NOT MUCH OF A PROBLEM.“

Der Koffer hat eine elfenbeinfarbene Vulkanfiberplatte und kobaltblaue, mit Messingnieten besetzten Ecken, die das Aussehen eines Bilderrahmens vermitteln können.

"Eines der Dinge, die ich an diesen Entwürfen am meisten mag, ist, dass sie wirklich genau die falsche Farbe haben."

Im Interview mit Globe-Trotter bekannte der Künstler, dass er fasziniert von den Entwürfen war, weil sie eine ganz falsche Farbe hatten. David Shrigley durfte Farbe und Textur selbst auswählen und entschied sich dann für Creme, eine Farbe, die er für ein kommerzielles Gepäckstücken als dekadent empfand. So stellte er den das Kofferdesign zusammen, damit es ein unpraktisches Kunstgepäckstück werden konnte. 

Dann wählte er die Aussagen aus: Eine bezog sich auf das Gepäck selbst als Metapher, die andere Aussage sollte eher schräg sein. Zum Wortlaut befragt befand David Shrigley: „Ich interessiere mich für Metaphern und schräge Aussagen, auf die man seine eigene Bedeutung projizieren kann. Meine Entwürfe sind keine Kreuzworträtsel, für die es nur eine Lösung gibt - je nach Kontext ändert sich auch die Bedeutung.“

David Shrigley wird von vielen Marken für Kooperationen angeschrieben, aber entschied sich für Globe-Trotter, „ da vieles von dem, was sie machen, ist in limitierter Auflage erhältlich, was mich als Künstler anspricht, da das, was ich mache, zwangsläufig auch einzigartig oder in kleiner Auflage ist.
