"The most beautiful moments in life are not those in which you breathe,

but those that take your breath away."

Rainer Maria Rilke

Cologne artist Gaby Fey stages portraits and icons of art history - under water. Now her art can be seen in Wiesbaden. The location of the series of paintings will be in the Rococo-style Christophorus Church at Paradiesgäßchen 9 in Wiesbaden-Schierstein.

"I experience this absolute silence, which I love so much about my work under water, in a similar way in a place of worship," explains Gaby Fey, and Susanne Claußen, education officer at the Protestant Deanery of Wiesbaden, emphasises: "Here, church space and artwork overlap in their intentions and I hope they reinforce each other."

On view are "La Cène", a detailed interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's world-famous "Last Supper", "Le Radeau de la Méduse", based on Théodore Géricault's "Raft of the Medusa", as well as "Confrontation" - a weightlessly floating Jesus.

"Each of my paintings holds a secret," says Gaby Fey. "I take the viewer on a journey into the unconscious, into the magical universe of our wishes and dreams."

The artist prepares long and meticulously for the realisation of her works - it took almost a year to complete "La Cène". All the pictures in the exhibition were created in a pool in the South of France, where Gaby Fey lives for several months of the year.

About the artist:

Gaby Fey first works in front of the camera - as an internationally sought-after model. She develops an almost symbiotic relationship with water, which becomes visible in her impressive and inspiring photographic work. Exhibitions in Germany, France, Monaco, Austria and Switzerland are proof of the international interest in her work. TV stations, newspapers and online publications have already reported extensively on the work of the avant-garde underwater artist.

Water shapes Wiesbaden

Legend has it that the giant Ekko, enraged that a dragon had escaped him while hunting in the Taunus forests, drove his sword into the ground near Wiesbaden. Hot water sprayed towards him. Ekko had found the first spring of healing water.

Water is the basis of all life and an indispensable commodity. Wiesbaden institutions such as churches, mosques, galleries, museums, universities, schools and the adult education centre are participating in the "Year of Water". The programme includes exhibitions, city tours, plays and many other projects and activities.
