Düsseldof, 22 December 2022: The Hetjens-Museum, German Ceramics Museum, located in Düsseldorf's Old Town, honours Japanese friendship with one of the most beautiful exhibitions of recent years. The exhibition was opened by Ms Setsuko Kawahara, Consul General of Japan in Düsseldorf, on 19 October 2022. In her welcome message, she emphasised the important role of culture and art in international exchange. She also expressed her gratitude for the good cooperation between the Hetjens-Museum and the Japanese Consulate General.

About the exhibition

The exhibition focuses on Japanese arts and crafts of the 19th and early 20th centuries. This is juxtaposed with so-called Japonistic works - i.e. works of European manufacture inspired by the art of Japan. Most of the objects come from the Hildegard and Wilhelm Preker Collection, which was donated to the Hetjens-Museum. Loans from museum and private collections, such as the German Fächermuseum in Bielefeld, are also on display. The visitor experiences an elaborate staging, with painted and embroidered silk kimonos and flowers - even Japanese gold rain was attached to the museum ceilings.

Japan and the West

Until the 1850s, Japan was in a self-imposed isolation and it was only Japan's participation in the World's Fairs in Paris (1867) and Vienna (1873) that led to an exchange between Japan and the West. Internationally, there was great enthusiasm for the re-establishment of the Empire and collectors began to collect Japanese art, handicrafts and fashion.

At the same time, Japan saw the collapse of Shogun rule and the reintroduction of the Empire.

The aesthetic principles of Japan are particularly expressed in tea ceramics. Japanese ceramics feature simple paintings and dark or earth-coloured glazes. For export, on the other hand, other ceramics were produced with rich colours and gold painting.

Particularly popular motifs came from the plant and animal world. These motifs were supposed to bring good luck or promise a long life. One of the best-known animal motifs in East Asia and especially in Japan are cranes, which can be found as motifs on numerous handicraft objects.

In Japan, Buddhist beliefs were practised parallel to nature religions. For the Western market, Japanese artisans produced numerous vessels and figures, for the design of which various deities and mythological figures were mixed.

The Visit of Trash People Circular Valley Forum Ansgar Van Treeck

Art Calendar / Environment / Business, 19 November 2022

HA Schult's Trash People at the Circular Valley Forum in Wuppertal on 18 November 2022."Check the thing you want to throw away and don't give it away. It is the mirror of yourself. Don't betray your soul." 600 decision-makers from business and politics came together, including environmental activists from the early days such as HA Schult and former Federal Environment Minister Klaus Töpfer, described by the Forum as the "father of the circular economy". The participants were surprised by the Trash People, many of whom had never seen the artworks up close before. But the performance also shows what role artists play. They are not among the decision-makers, but art has the power to unite and emotionalise people, as it did on this evening.

Also in the media was his legal dispute with the English artist Anish Kapoor, in which he criticised the so-called monopolisation of "Vantablack". His new colour creation "Placebo", a beautifully changing shade of purple, is available to everyone.
