Düsseldorf, 21 July 2022: "Michael Kagan: It Lasts Forever" is the artist's first exhibition at the London gallery, following his 2021 exhibition "How We Remember" at Almine Rech in Brussels. Michael Kagan is a Brooklyn-based artist known for his oil paintings with large, expressive brushstrokes. 

Michael Kagan explores the physical and emotional journeys that explorers from mountaineers to astronauts, go through. His paintings can be described as highly dramatic. In his characteristically thick brushstrokes, he depicts people pushing the limits of nature through physical endurance and technology. 

Michael Kagan admires these heroes and is drawn to the cinematic and epic. His collectors include Elon Musk, to whose Space X he was invited, NASA astronaut Leland Melvin, Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa and Nike CEO Mark Parker. In 2013, Michael Kagan collaborated with Pharrell Williams, for whom he designed a special edition of the ready-to-wear collection. This September, there will be a third collaboration between the artist and the music star.

He describes the message of his work as Iconic moments that changed the future in a split second. An exclusive interview:

Alethea Magazine: Can you tell me a little about your current exhibition at Almine Rech? 

Michael Kagan: It is my second exhibition at Almine Rech and my first in London. It is also the first time I have shown sculpture alongside my paintings, which I am known for. 

This exhibition is a short 'timeline' of the three space programmes that took us to the moon: Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. As you enter the gallery, you see three giant rocket images of the famous John Glenn launch that put the first American into orbit. This set the stage for Project Gemini, which can be seen in the centre of the gallery in a painting of a hovering astronaut... the first spacewalk with Ed White. The last room of the gallery represents the culmination of the Mercury and Gemini missions: the Apollo programme. Working with sculptures was interesting and important to the installation because I could really take the viewer through the exhibition and create a narrative.

Alethea Magazine: You often portray astronauts and racers. What fascinates you about these worlds? 

Michael Kagan: I like the gladiator aspect of it. The helmets and all the equipment... it's cinematic and epic. 

Alethea Magazine: Would you also like to fly into space yourself? 

Michael Kagan: Yes, I plan to! 

Invitation to SpaceX

Alethea Magazine: Do you sometimes work with real astronauts or just photos? Do you sometimes meet astronauts in person or visit space centres? Have your subjects ever come into contact with your work - if so, how did they react? 

Michael Kagan: I've had some really great experiences with the space programme because of my work. I was invited to SpaceX... Elon Musk owns a painting. NASA astronaut Leland Melvin has become a close friend. He also owns a painting of mine and was involved in my museum exhibition. Most of my paintings are based on historical photographs, but there is also a new sculpture project I'm working on, and I have access to real NASA-flown space footage.

Alethea Magazine: What would you describe as the message of your work? 

Michael Kagan: Iconic moments that changed the future in a split second.... they stay forever.

Alethea Magazine: You also had a collaboration with Pharrell Williams in 2013. What do you think of other collaborations between brands and artists? Are there any that seem particularly interesting or successful to you? 

Michael Kagan: I've done two collaborations with Pharrell and we have a third one this September. 

I'm a big fan of the intersection of art, fashion and music. It's a great way to reach the masses.... I like how brands like Dior build a whole collection around an artist. I feel like you see that more and more these days. 

Alethea Magazine: Can you reveal something about your next plans? 

Michael Kagan: I'm looking forward to my Pharrell collaboration in September. My next solo show will be in New York City in spring 2023, followed by a solo show in Shanghai in 2024. I also have three exciting editions of prints and sculptures planned throughout the year.

Michael Kagan

Born in Virginia Beach in 1980, Michael Kagan received his BA from George Washington University and his MFA from the New York Academy of Art, where he also completed a post-graduate fellowship in 2005. His special projects include a commission for the Smithsonian, two clothing collaborations with Pharrell Williams and the album cover for The White Lies album Big TV, which won the Art Vinyl Award for Best Art Vinyl in 2013. He recently had a solo exhibition at Virginia MOCA, Virginia Beach, VA, USA (2019/2020).

Kagan's work is held in the collections of the Hall Collection, Reading, VT, USA; Maezawa Collection, Chiba, Japan; Maki Collection, Tokyo, Japan; Gemini Trust Company, New York, NY, USA; Fidelity Investments Corporate Contemporary Art Collection, Boston, MA, USA; Founders Fund, San Francisco, CA, USA; and Jacob & Co, New York, NY, USA, among others. He has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows worldwide. A recent monograph of

his work was published in 2019 by ARTBOOK | DAP.

July 2022: “Michael Kagan: It Lasts Forever" ist die erste Ausstellung des Künstlers in der Londoner Galerie, nachdem er 2021 seine Ausstellung "How We Remember" bei Almine Rech in Brüssel gezeigt hat. Michael Kagan ist ein in Brooklyn lebender Künstler, der für seine Ölgemälde mit großen, ausdrucksstarken Pinselstrichen bekannt ist. 

Michael Kagan erforscht die physischen und emotionalen Reisen, die Entdecker von Bergsteigern bis hin zu Astronauten, durchmachen. Seine Gemälde können als hochdramatisch bezeichnet werden. In seinen charakteristisch dicken Pinselstrichen zeigt er Menschen, die durch körperliche Ausdauer und Technologie an die Grenzen der Natur stoßen. 

Michael Kagan bewundert diese Helden und fühlt sich vom Filmischen und Epischen angezogen. Zu seinen Sammlern gehören neben Elon Musk, zu dessen Space X er eingeladen war, der NASA-Astronaut Leland Melvin, der japanische Unternehmer Yusaku Maezawa und Nike CEO Mark Parker. 2013 kooperierte Michael Kagan mit Pharrell Williams, für den er eine Special edition der ready-to-wear collection entwarf. Diesen September wird es eine dritte Kooperation zwischen dem Künstler und dem Musikstar geben.

Alethea Magazine: Können Sie mir ein wenig über Ihre aktuelle Ausstellung bei Almine Rech erzählen? 

Michael Kagan: Es ist meine zweite Ausstellung bei Almine Rech und meine erste in London. Es ist auch das erste Mal, dass ich neben meinen Gemälden, für die ich bekannt bin, auch Skulpturen zeige. 

Diese Ausstellung ist eine kurze "Zeitleiste" der drei Raumfahrtprogramme, die uns zum Mond gebracht haben: Mercury, Gemini und Apollo. Wenn man die Galerie betritt, sieht man drei riesige Raketenbilder des berühmten John-Glenn-Starts, der den ersten Amerikaner in die Umlaufbahn brachte. Damit war die Grundlage für das Projekt Gemini geschaffen, das in der Mitte der Galerie auf einem Gemälde eines schwebenden Astronauten zu sehen ist... der erste Weltraumspaziergang mit Ed White. Der letzte Raum der Galerie stellt den Höhepunkt der Mercury- und Gemini-Missionen dar: das Apollo-Programm. Die Arbeit mit Skulpturen war interessant und wichtig für die Installation, weil ich den Betrachter wirklich durch die Ausstellung führen und eine Erzählung schaffen konnte. 

Alethea Magazine: Sie porträtieren oft Astronauten und Rennfahrer. Was fasziniert Sie an diesen Welten? 

Michael Kagan: Ich mag den Gladiatoren-Aspekt daran. Die Helme und die ganze Ausrüstung... das ist filmisch und episch. 

Alethea Magazine: Würden Sie auch gerne selbst ins All fliegen? 

Michael Kagan: Ja, das habe ich vor!

Alethea Magazine: Arbeiten Sie manchmal mit echten Astronauten oder nur mit Fotos? Treffen Sie die Astronauten manchmal persönlich oder besuchen Sie Raumfahrtzentren? Sind Ihre Probanden schon einmal mit Ihrer Arbeit in Berührung gekommen - wenn ja, wie haben sie reagiert? 

Michael Kagan: Ich habe aufgrund meiner Arbeit einige wirklich tolle Erfahrungen mit dem Raumfahrtprogramm gemacht. Ich wurde zu SpaceX eingeladen... Elon Musk besitzt ein Gemälde. Der NASA-Astronaut Leland Melvin ist zu einem engen Freund geworden. Er besitzt auch ein Gemälde von mir und war an meiner Museumsausstellung beteiligt. Die meisten meiner Gemälde basieren auf historischen Fotografien, aber es gibt auch ein neues Skulpturenprojekt, an dem ich arbeite, und ich habe Zugang zu echtem, von der NASA geflogenem Raumfahrtmaterial.

Alethea Magazine: Was würden Sie als die Botschaft Ihrer Arbeit beschreiben? 

Michael Kagan: Ikonische Momente, die die Zukunft in einem Sekundenbruchteil verändert haben... sie bleiben für immer. 

Alethea Magazine: Sie hatten 2013 auch eine Zusammenarbeit mit Pharrell Williams. Was halten Sie von anderen Kooperationen zwischen Marken und Künstlern? Gibt es welche, die Ihnen besonders interessant oder erfolgreich erscheinen? 

Michael Kagan: Ich habe zwei Kollaborationen mit Pharrell gemacht und wir haben diesen September eine dritte. 

Ich bin ein großer Fan von der Überschneidung von Kunst, Mode und Musik. Es ist eine großartige Möglichkeit, die Massen zu erreichen... Ich mag es, wie Marken wie Dior eine ganze Kollektion um einen Künstler herum aufbauen. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass man so etwas heutzutage immer öfter sieht. 

Alethea Magazine: Können Sie etwas über Ihre nächsten Pläne verraten? 

Michael Kagan: Ich freue mich schon auf meine Pharrell-Kollaboration im September. Meine nächste Einzelausstellung wird im Frühjahr 2023 in New York City stattfinden, gefolgt von einer Einzelausstellung in Shanghai im Jahr 2024. Außerdem habe ich im Laufe des Jahres drei spannende Editionen von Drucken und Skulpturen geplant.
