Interview with Michel Fornasier,

founder of Give CHILDREN a Hand Foundation. 

"When weakness becomes a superpower."

15 July 2022: The world is full of fantasy and superheroes with all kinds of superpowers. But one of the most important superpowers could be to turn a weakness into a strength. That's exactly what the Bionicman's job is. Alethea Magazine met the man behind Bionicman, Michel Fornasier, founder of the Give CHILDREN a Hand Foundation, who was in the middle of a shooting, but had time to answer some questions. 

Born in Switzerland, Fornasier created the superhero Bionicman and gained international fame. It was a long road to get there. Michel Fornasier was born without a right hand and hid this fact for 35 years. He embarked on a career in the financial world and with various non-profit organisations and became very successful. 

It was not until he was an adult that he was able to make peace with himself and his physical impairment and realised that this self-acceptance made him feel much better. 

Today, Bionicman visits schools and sports camps because tolerance and respect for diversity should start with children. 

Michel Fornaiser and David Boller, who drew the first 3 volumes of the comic book Bionicman, have a clear idea of how their superhero characters should be. Non-violent, helpful and always have an encouraging line ready.   

What is the role of Bionicman?
 Bionicman sensitises children to tolerance, acceptance and more humanity. His mission is to transform supposed weaknesses into superpowers. A message that also applies to adults.

Alethea Magazine: How did you come up with the idea of your hero character?

Michel Fornasier: The children were the inspiration. I have been wearing a bionic prosthetic hand for 5 years. The children often asked me if it also had superpowers. At first I answered in the negative, and the children were disappointed. Then I decided to answer with: "It could well be possible". They happily ran to their parents and said that when they grew up, they would also like to have such a magic hand. 

My good friend David Boller drew for DC Comics and Marvel in the USA for a long time. After Wonder Woman, Batman, Iron Man and the like, we decided to create a superhero and superheroine with a handicap. Like Bionicman, Bionica also exists in real life. Her real name is Romina Manser from Winterthur. Romina was born without a left hand. The missing hand of the two superhero characters is emblematic of all the peculiarities like a big nose, protruding ears, gaps in the teeth, everything that makes us different and special at the end of the day. 

Alethea Magazine: How were you able to turn your weakness into your superpower?


Michel Fornasier: A missing hand is not a serious handicap but a very visible one. The whispering in the swimming pool was particularly unpleasant. So I withdrew more and more and preferred to hide the stump of my arm rather than show it in public.

At some point I got tired of constantly hiding my arm behind my back or in my jacket pocket. I said to myself, this is just part of you. I am no better or worse than anyone else because of it.

Alethea Magazine: The world is full of heroes and fantasy figures. What qualities does a hero need to have in order to make a difference in our world? Michel Fornasier: Everyone can answer this question, because there is a superhero in everyone. All of us have superpowers, two of which are respect and self-acceptance. These qualities are contagious and can easily be carried into the world and motivate and inspire a society.

The adventures of Bionicman and his friends have been captured in three comic books. All the characters exist both as comic book characters and in real life. 

Alethea Magazine: On the subject of bullying, do you think enough attention is paid to this issue and what more do you think can be done?

Michel Fornasier: Things have changed in the last few years. Bullying and discrimination are no longer taboo, but people talk about it openly. Dialogue is an important step in the right direction. 

Alethea Magazine: Can you tell us about a particularly emotional event?

Michel Fornasier: Standing in front of a class as a Bionicman is a magical moment. The other day at school, a girl came up to me and pointed to her hearing aid. Proudly she said, "Look Bionicman, I have a super power too." A boy with a birthmark stepped in front of the class and announced, "That makes me special." Or a girl in a wheelchair told me that when she read our comics she forgot about her wheelchair. In her imagination she could fly like Bionica.
People are like flowers; unique and special. It is diversity that makes a bouquet colourful.

Alethea Magazine: What have you been able to achieve since you became the Bionicman?

Michel Fornasier: I have been touring Switzerland and nearby countries as the Bionicman for 4 years. When I ask the children on the "Rise & Be Nice" tour about their superpowers, more and more boys and girls want the superpower of turning a weakness into a strength. It makes you realise what you can do together and with a positive attitude.

Alethea Magazine: Can you tell me your message for affected people?

Michel Fornasier: Most of us have faced discrimination and bullying in our lives. For us, it's about giving a helping hand, building a bridge between people with and without impairments and breaking down fears of contact.

Alethea Magazine: What are your plans or upcoming collaborations?

Michel Fornasier: An animated film is at the top of the list. In addition, the new Bionicman comic book with the Bionics - a time-travelling pirate cat, the flying super-dog Biog and of course Bionica and Bionicman and many other surprises - will be published in 2023. For the fourth comic book, we can count on the support of two illustrator friends from Marvel, various street art artists, manga illustrators and many more.

A ("Piece of Art") work of art full of exciting adventures and humanity, where inclusion, friendship and respect for diversity is guaranteed.

„Wenn Schwäche eine Superpower wird."

15. Juli 2022: Die Welt ist voller Fantasie- und Superhelden mit den unterschiedlichsten Superkräften. Aber eine der wichtigsten Superkräfte könnte sein, eine Schwäche in eine Stärke zu verwandeln. Das genau ist die Aufgabe des Bionicman. Alethea Magazine traf den Mann hinter Bionicman, Michel Fornasier, Gründer der Give CHILDREN a Hand Foundation, der mitten in einem Dreh war, aber Zeit hatte, einige Fragen zu beantworten. 

Der gebürtige Schweizer hat den Superhelden Bionicman ins Leben gerufen und damit internationale Bekanntheit erlangt. 

Es war ein langer Weg dorthin. Michel Fornasier wurde ohne rechte Hand geboren und versteckte diesen Umstand 35 Jahre lang. Er schlug eine Karriere in der Finanzwelt und bei verschiedenen Non-Profit Organisationen ein und wurde sehr erfolgreich.  Erst als erwachsener Mann konnte er Frieden mit sich und seiner körperlichen Beeinträchtigung schliessen und erkannte, dass es ihm mit dieser Selbstakzeptanz viel besser ging. 

Heute besucht Bionicman Schulen und Sportcamps, weil Toleranz und Respekt vor Diversität schon bei den Kindern beginnen sollten. 

Michel Fornaiser und David Boller, welcher die ersten 3 Bände des Comicbuches Bionicman gezeichnet hat, haben ein klare Vorstellung, wie ihre Superhelden Figuren sein sollten. Gewaltfrei, Hilfsbereit und stets einen ermutigenden Spruch bereit haben.   

Was ist die Rolle des Bionicman?
Bionicman sensibilisiert Kinder für Toleranz, Akzeptanz und mehr Menschlichkeit. Seine Mission ist es, vermeintliche Schwächen in Superkräfte umzuwandeln. Eine Botschaft, die auch für Erwachsene zutrifft. 

Alethea Magazine: Wie sind Sie auf die Idee Ihrer Heldenfigur gekommen?

Michel Fornasier: Die Kinder waren die Inspiration. Seit 5 Jahren trage ich eine bionische Handprothese. Oft fragten mich die Kindern, ob diese auch über Superkräfte verfügt. Anfangs verneinte ich die Frage, worauf die Kinder enttäuscht waren. Dann beschloss ich mit: „Es könnte gut möglich sein“, zu antworten. Freudig rannten sie zu ihren Eltern und sagten, dass sie, wenn sie gross seien, auch eine solche Zauberhand haben möchten. 

Mein guter Freund David Boller zeichnete lange Zeit in den USA für DC Comics und Marvel. Nach Wonder Woman, Batman, Iron Man und Co. beschlossen wir, eine Superheldin und einen Superhelden mit einem Handicap ins Leben zu rufen. Wie Bionicman existiert auch Bionica im realen Leben. Ihr bürgelicher Name ist Romina Manser aus Winterthur. Romina kam ohne linke Hand zur Welt. Die fehlende Hand der beiden Superheldenfiguren steht dabei sinnbildlich für alle Besonderheiten wie eine große Nase, abstehende Ohren, Zahnlücken, alles, was uns am Ende des Tages unterscheidet und besonders macht. 

Alethea Magazine: Wie konnten Sie Ihre Schwäche zu Ihrer Superpower machen?
Michel Fornasier: Eine fehlende Hand ist keine schwere dafür eine sehr sichtbare Beeinträchtigung. Besonders unangenehm war das Getuschel im Freibad. Worauf ich mich immer mehr zurückzog und meinen Armstumpf lieber versteckte als in der Öffentlichkeit zeigte. Irgendwann war ich es leid und müde den Arm ständig hinter meinem Rücken oder in der Jackentasche zu verbergen. Ich sagte mir, dies gehört nunmal zu dir. Wegen dem bin ich nicht besser oder schlechter als andere.

Alethea Magazine: Die Welt ist voller Helden und Fantasie Figuren. Welche Qualitäten muss ein Held haben, um etwas in unserer Welt bewirken zu können?

Michel Fornasier: Diese Frage können alle beantworten, denn in jedem Menschen steckt eine Superheldin bzw. ein Superheld. Alle von uns haben Superkräfte, zwei davon sind Respekt und Selbstakzeptanz. Diese Eigenschaften sind ansteckend und können spielend leicht in die Welt getragen werden und eine Gesellschaft motivieren und beflügeln. Die Abenteuer von Bionicman und seinen Freunden wurden in drei Comicbüchern festgehalten. Sämtliche Figuren existieren sowohl als Comic Charakteren als auch im realen Leben. 

Alethea Magazine: Zum Thema Mobbing: Glauben Sie, dass diesem Thema genug Beachtung geschenkt wird und was denken Sie, kann noch getan werden?

Michel Fornasier: In den letzten Jahren hat sich einiges getan. Mobbing und Diskriminierung wird nicht mehr tabuisiert, sondern man spricht offen darüber. Der Dialog ist ein wichtiger Schritt in die richtige Richtung. 

Alethea Magazine: Können Sie von einem besonders emotionalen Ereignis berichten?

Michel Fornasier: Als Bionicman vor einer Klasse zu stehen, ist ein magischer Moment. Neulich kam in der Schule ein Mädchen auf mich zu und zeigte auf Ihr Hörgerät. Stolz meinte sie: „Schau Bionicman, ich habe auch eine Superkraft.“ Ein Junge mit einem Muttermal trat vor die Klasse und verkündete: „Das macht mich besonders“. Oder ein Mädchen in einem Rollstuhl sagte mir, dass wenn sie unsere Comics lese, sie ihren Rollstuhl vergesse. In ihrer Fantasie könne sie fliegen wie Bionica.

Menschen sind wie Blumen; einzigartig und besonders. Erst die Vielfalt macht einen Blumenstrauß bunt. 

Alethea Magazine: Was haben Sie, seit Sie der Bionicman sind, erreichen können?

Michel Fornasier: Seit 4 Jahren toure ich als Bionicman durch die Schweiz und ins nahe Ausland. Wenn ich die Kinder auf der "Rise & Be Nice" Tour nach ihren Superkräften frage, wünschen sich immer mehr Jungs und Mädchen die Superkraft eine Schwäche in eine Stärke zu verwandeln. Da wird einem bewusst, was man gemeinsam und mit einer positiven Einstellung bewirken kann.

Alethea Magazine: Können Sie mir Ihre Botschaft für betroffene Menschen formulieren?

Michel Fornasier: Die meisten von uns wurden in ihrem Leben mit Diskriminierung und Mobbing konfrontiert. Uns geht es darum, eine helfende Hand zu reichen, eine Brücke zwischen Menschen mit und ohne Beeinträchtigung zu bauen und Berührungsängste abzubauen.

Alethea Magazine: Welche Pläne haben Sie oder welche Kooperationen stehen bevor?

Michel Fornasier: Ein Trickfilm steht ganz oben auf der Liste. Dazu erscheint 2023 das neue Bionicman Comicbuch mit den Bionics - einer zeitreisenden Piratenkatze, dem fliegenden Superhund Biog und natürlich Bionica und Bionicman sowie viele weitere Überraschungen. Für das vierte Comicband können wir auf die Unterstützung zweier Zeicher-Freunde von Marvel, verschiedene Streetart-Künstler, Manga-Illustratoren und viele mehr zählen. Ein ("Piece of Art") Kunstwerk voller spannender Abenteuer und Menschlichkeit, wo die Inklusion, Freundschaft und der Respekt vor der Vielfalt garantiert ist.
