Pinaree Sanpitak & Maison Valentino's Toile Iconographe at Singapore Art Week

Fashion, art and culture

In a surprising art collaboration, Maison Valentino shows Pinaree Sanpitaks "Breast Stupas Valentino" with the Valentino Toile Iconographe.

And: Valentino Toile Iconographe, what is it all about?

V - the power of a letter.

14 January 2023: Maison Valentino continues its collaborations with artists and presents a special collaboration with Thailand artist Pinaree Sanpitak on the occasion of the inaugural edition of ART SG in Singapore, the largest art fair in Southeast Asia to date: "Breast Stupas Valentino" entirely with the Valentino Toile Iconographe pattern. It is an important element of Valentino fashion and was first seen at the Valentino Unboxing SS23 in Paris and shortly after, mocked up to celebrities worldwide on social media.

The art collaboration - harmony of contradictions

The collaboration with Thai artist Pinaree Sanpitak resulted in a commissioned and ephemeral piece, Breast Stupa Cookery. The breast motif itself is meant to resemble the funerary monuments as well as ritual bowls, called stupas, found throughout South and Southeast Asia. The bowl as a vessel, a symbol of wealth and life, a vessel containing water and milk and also a representation of birth. Artist Pinaree Sanpitak commented: "It's a celebration of the body as a site of the sacred and the sensual, I see the Valentino Toile Iconographe on the models' bodies and on my own sculptures in a similar way to the Maison's values of freedom, community, inclusivity, dream and interaction with the stainless steel sculptures, as the Maison says, 'harmony of contradictions'."

Valentino Toile Iconographe, what's it all about?

V - the power of a letter

Is logomania still in vogue? Hasn't the trend towards discreet luxury, as in the 90s, long since set in? A complex question. In any case, letters, like the V logo, simply stand for history and tradition. All the beauty and glamour of a brand is united in a single letter. How could this ever go out of fashion?

At Maison Valentino, this is the Toile Iconographe - the logo artfully disappears into a graphic pattern, almost hypnotic, integrated yet free. Toile refers to a type of fabric from the 70s with decorative patterns. Iconography is rightly described by the Maison as "Obsessive and exaggerated, liberating and unique at the same time."

HA Schult's Trash People at the Circular Valley Forum in Wuppertal on 18 November 2022."Check the thing you want to throw away and don't give it away. It is the mirror of yourself. Don't betray your soul." 600 decision-makers from business and politics came together, including environmental activists from the early days such as HA Schult and former Federal Environment Minister Klaus Töpfer, described by the Forum as the "father of the circular economy". The participants were surprised by the Trash People, many of whom had never seen the artworks up close before. But the performance also shows what role artists play. They are not among the decision-makers, but art has the power to unite and emotionalise people, as it did on this evening.
