The Düsseldorf-based artist Claudia van Koolwijk prefers to photograph people against staged backgrounds. She also works with film, fabrics and various handicraft techniques as well as painting, drawings and watercolours. For some portraits, she produces large works on paper, which then serve as backgrounds for the photographs.

At Galerie Lausberg in Düsseldorf, she is showing her exhibition "Von Angesicht zu Angesicht", Portraits and Selbstportraits, until 26 June 2022. This exhibition is based on her interest in the relationship that exists between mask and person. Alethea & Art Magazine met Claudia van Koolwijk for an interview.

Claudia van Koolwijk's journey into art began at the age of 4. "Painting was a great enrichment, I was especially taken with the colours." She liked looking at her grandparents' paintings and when her mother's sister went to art school, she was allowed to paint with her.

Claudia van Koolwijk eventually went to the art academy and studied with Prof. Fritz Schwegler and Prof. Alfonso Hüppi, whose master student she became, from 1981 to 1987. Her main focus was painting, but she became interested in photography early on, as she felt she could work more freely there.

The inspiration

Claudia van Koolwijk has always found her inspiration in art books. The search for self-expression by women never left her, although this was not easy to find. On her way to them, she found medieval miniatures, alchemical representations, the art of the Egyptians. 

"What interests me today and already accompanied me during my time at the academy was also the question of how artistic collaboration as a couple can succeed. That which makes the differences in experience and perception is at the same time the inspiration and friction. My father's delicate early photographs of my mother bear a strong resemblance to photographs of people dear to me."

Claudia van Koolwijk found further inspiration in her grandfather's old photo albums and in beautiful fabrics. She was also inspired by an old small church with its floral decorations and sculptures.

"This culminated in the Corpus Christi procession with many flags and carpets of flowers in front of the doors of the faithful, which anticipated many things that were later expressed in my backgrounds. The art of other cultures and an unforgettable trip to Florence serve as inspiration for my works. A few years ago, I inherited my grandfather and father's photographic estate, both of which inspire me in different ways."

On her role models:

"When I visited the exhibitions at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, modern art came along, which amazed and inspired me Beuys, Richter, Ruthenbeck, Paik, Johannes Brus, Fluxus my two teachers Fritz Schwegler and Alfonso Hüppi, to whom I owe a lot."

Currently, the artist is working on a representation of her inspirations in the form of photographs of books and places, as her knowledge in photography, painting and performance is greater than when she started her career as an artist. 

"My inspirations come from a wide variety of sources: what I've read, encounters and conversations, other cultures and places around the world, and animate and inanimate nature, which has inspired me in a special way ever since I studied biology."

How do you choose your models?

Claudia van Koolwijk draws inspiration for her portraits from encounters with other people. She tries to find an appropriate environment for the people in the backgrounds so that they can fully develop. 

The most important thing for the artist is a collaboration with the portrayed and the dedication of the photographer and the model in the moment. "The photo shoots are in this sense as my professor Fritz Schwegler said at our last meeting two-man performance and the photos the documents of the approach of it."

"Often it is themes from theatre, nature, poetry and dance that occupy me. I find correspondences in the people who surround me or who I meet. It becomes clear to me that they carry or symbolise something that occupies me thematically."

Commissioned work:

"With commissioned works, I first spend more time with the person before I come to a conclusion. The longer I have thought about it, the more convincing is the interplay between the background, the person and myself, although many pictures look as if they were created spontaneously. The examination of the background, which is so important in portrait painting, is no less important to me than the examination of the model herself. I don't think I need the staging for my portraits, it's almost as if the real thing is the relationship with the subject."

Future projects:

The artist is currently working on her catalogue raisonné, a book project on portraiture and several collaborations with other artists. After the book is completed, she would like to do a larger fabric work.

Biography:

Claudia van Koolwijk, born in Düsseldorf, has worked as an artist and photographer since the mid-1980s. Her work has appeared in about a dozen monographs and catalogues. Works hang in public and private collections and have been presented in numerous exhibitions. She studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1981 to 1987 with Prof. Fritz Schwegler and Prof. Alfonso Hüppi, whose master student she became. Claudia van Koolwijk lives in Mettmann near Düsseldorf.

Die Düsseldorfer Künstlerin Claudia van Koolwijk fotografiert vorzugsweise Menschen vor inszenierten Hintergründen. Ausserdem arbeitet sie mit Film, Stoffen und verschiedenen Handarbeitstechniken sowie Malerei, Zeichnungen und Aquarellen. Für manche Portraits stellt sie große Papierarbeiten her, die dann als Hintergründe der Fotos dienen.

In der Galerie Lausberg in Düsseldorf zeigt sie bis zum 26. Juni 2022 ihre Ausstellung „Von Angesicht zu Angesicht“, Portraits and Selbstportraits. Diese Ausstellung liegt ihrem Interesse an dem Verhältnis, das zwischen Maske und Person besteht, zugrunde.

Alethea & Art Magazine traf Claudia van Koolwijk zu einem Interview.

Claudia van Koolwijk’s Weg in die Kunst begann bereits im Alter von 4 Jahren. „Malen war eine große Bereicherung, besonders die Farben hatten es mir angetan.“ Sie sah sich gerne die Bilder ihrer Großeltern an und als die Schwester ihrer Mutter zur Kunstakademie ging, durfte sie mit ihr malen.

Claudia van Koolwijk ging schliesslich auf die Kunstakademie und studierte von 1981 bis 1987 bei Prof. Fritz Schwegler und Prof. Alfonso Hüppi, dessen Meisterschülerin sie wurde. Ihr Schwerpunkt war Malerei, aber sie begann früh, sich für Fotografie zu interessieren, da sie empfand, dort freier arbeiten zu können.

Die Inspiration

Claudia van Koolwijk fand ihre Inspiration schon immer in Kunstbüchern. Die Suche nach Selbstdarstellung von Frauen ließ sie nicht mehr los, obwohl dies nicht leicht zu finden war.

Auf dem Weg zu ihnen fand sie zu mittelalterlichen Miniaturen, zu alchemistischen Darstellungen, zur Kunst der Ägypter. 

"Was mich heute interessiert und schon in der Akademie-Zeit begleitete, war zudem die Frage, wie die künstlerische Zusammenarbeit als Paar gelingen kann. Das was die Unterschiede im Erleben und in der Wahrnehmung ausmacht, ist gleichzeitig die Inspiration und Friktion. Die zarten, frühen Fotografien meines Vaters von meiner Mutter haben große Ähnlichkeit zu Aufnahmen von mir lieben Personen.“

Weitere Inspirationen fand Claudia van Koolwijk in alten Fotoalben des Großvaters und in schönen Stoffen. Auch eine alte kleine Kirche inspirierte sie mit ihren Blumendekoration und Skulpturen.

„Das gipfelte in der Fronleichnamsprozession mit vielen Fahnen und Blumenteppichen vor den Türen der Gläubigen, die vieles vorwegnahmen, was später in meinen Hintergründen zum Ausdruck kamen. Die Kunst anderer Kulturen und eine unvergessliche Reise nach Florenz dienen mir als Inspiration für meine Werke. Vor einigen Jahren habe ich den Fotonachlass meines Großvaters und Vater geerbt, die mich beide auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise inspirieren.“

Zu den Vorbilder:

„Mit dem Besuch der Ausstellungen der Kunsthalle Düsseldorf kam die moderne Kunst dazu, die mich erstaunte und begeisterte Beuys, Richter, Ruthenbeck, Paik, Johannes Brus, Fluxus meine beiden Lehrer Fritz Schwegler und Alfonso Hüppi, denen ich viel verdanke.“

Zur Zeit arbeitet die Künstlerin an einer Darstellung ihrer Inspirationen in Form von Fotos von Büchern und Orten, da ihr Wissen in Fotografie, Malerei und Performance größer ist als zu Beginn ihrer Laufbahn als Künstlerin. 

„Meine Inspirationen stammen aus verschiedensten Quellen: aus Gelesenem, Begegnungen und Gesprächen, anderen Kulturen und Orten der Welt sowie der belebten und unbelebten Natur, die mich schon seit meinem Biologiestudium auf eine besondere Art und Weise inspiriert.“

Wie wählen Sie Ihre Modelle aus?

Claudia van Koolwijk lässt sich von Begegnungen mit anderen Menschen zu ihren Portraits inspirieren. Sie versucht, in den Hintergründen eine entsprechende Umgebung für die Personen zu finden, so dass sie sich voll entfalten können. 

Das Wichtigste ist der Künstlerin eine Zusammenarbeit mit den Portraitierten und die Hingabe von Fotografin und dem Modell in dem Moment. „Die Fototermine sind in diesem Sinne wie mein Professor Fritz Schwegler bei unserer letzten Begegnung meinte Zwei-Mann-Performance und die Fotos die Dokumente der Annäherung davon.“

„Oft sind es Themen aus dem Theater, der Natur, Gedichten und dem Tanz die mich beschäftigen. In den Personen, die mich umgeben oder die mir begegnen, finde ich Entsprechungen. Es wird mir deutlich, dass sie etwas in sich tragen oder versinnbildlichen, was mich thematisch beschäftigt.“

Auftragsarbeiten:

„Bei Auftragsarbeiten beschäftige ich mich zunächst länger mit der Person, bevor ich zu einem Ergebnis komme. Je länger ich nachgedacht habe, umso überzeugender ist das Zusammenspiel des Hintergrunds, der Person und mir, obwohl viele Bilder aussehen als wären sie spontan entstanden. Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Hintergrund, die in der Portraitmalerei so wichtig ist, ist bei mir nicht weniger von Bedeutung als die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Modell selber. Ich glaube nicht, dass ich die Inszenierung für meine Portraits benötige, es ist fast so als sei das Eigentliche die Beziehung zu dem Portraitierten.“

Zukünftige Projekte:

Derzeit arbeitet die Künstlerin an ihrem Werkverzeichnis, einem Buchprojekt zum Thema Portrait und mehrere Kooperationen mit anderen Künstlern. Nach Fertigstellung des Buches möchte sie eine größere Stoffarbeit machen.

Claudia van Koolwijk, in Düsseldorf geboren, arbeitet seit Mitte der 80er Jahre als Künstlerin und Fotografin. Ihre Arbeiten erschienen in rund einem dutzend Monographien und Kataloge. Werke hängen in öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen und wurden in zahlreichen Ausstellungen präsentiert. Sie studierte von 1981 bis 1987 an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf bei Prof. Fritz Schwegler und Prof. Alfonso Hüppi, dessen Meisterschülerin sie wurde. Claudia van Koolwijk lebt in Mettmann bei Düsseldorf.
