Düsseldorf's Goldsmith:
Friedrich Becker Award 2023
Major jewellery exhibition at the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf from 6 May.
Lambertus church in the old town from Düsseldorf, where the first Radschläger was placed
Düsseldorf, 1 May 2023: This week, the Friedrich Becker Prize will be awarded in Düsseldorf, followed by a jewellery exhibition by international artists at the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf. The prize originates from a foundation of Hildegard Becker (1928-2018), the widow of the legendary Düsseldorf goldsmith Professor Friedrich Becker (1922-1997) and is awarded every three years by the Gesellschaft für Goldschmiedekunst e.V. for "outstanding independent design of the highest quality of execution".
Since 1999, the Gesellschaft für Goldschmiedekunst e.V. has commemorated the goldsmith and designer of kinetic objects. Friedrich Becker established the essential link to his adopted home with the design of the "Düsseldorfer Radschläger", an iconic form of the Radschläger myth. He first used it as a chain link on the Lord Mayor's chain of office in 1958, then created the door knocker on St. Lambertus Church in 1960 and a Radschläger cube around 1995.
129 artists from 21 countries applied for this year's Friedrich Becker Prize. In 2023, Norman Weber from Kaufbeuren-Neugablonz will receive the prize for three brooches made of 3-D printed plastic.
The entries from 42 selected artists will be shown in the two exhibitions, Stadtmuseum Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf (6 to 30 May 2023) and Deutsches Goldschmiedehaus Hanau (6 June to 9 July 2023).
