Düsseldorf, capital of North Rhine-Westphalia will receive the opera house of the future. 7 award-winning projects from international architectural firms were shown for the first time and we can reveal, they are truly spectacular. However, the location is still open and only then will the real building designs come. Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller revealed today that Heinrich-Heine-Allee is his "location of the heart".

Düsseldorf, February 15, 2023: Düsseldorf, Capital of North Rhine-Westphalia will receive the opera house of the future. 7 award-winning projects from international architectural firms were shown for the first time. But the location is still open. Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller revealed that Heinrich-Heine-Allee is his "location of the heart".

The opera house of the future at the location of the heart

The Düsseldorf Opera House, opened in 1875 as a municipal theater, stands on Heinrich-Heine-Allee, where Hofgarten and Königsallee meet, in the heart of the city. Up to 600 people work here, and over 180 opera and ballet performances take place each year. Today, the jury of the competition presented seven award-winning urban planning projects for the first time. Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller, Miriam Koch, Councillor for Culture and Integration, and Dr. Heinrich Labbert, Managing Director of IPM Düsseldorf GmbH, each showed 4 designs for Heinrich-Heine-Allee and 3 designs for Am Werhahn. The renderings of the opera house were spectacular, partly available as models and among others from Düsseldorf offices such as Ingenhoven associates and HPP Architekten. However, the models only serve the purpose of providing a basis for the location decision. A building construction competition will not take place until the summer.

What's next?

Starting tomorrow, the designs can be admired at Central, 1st floor, Worringerstrasse 140 until March 12. At the same time, a further phase of public participation is underway, the ideas of which will also be incorporated into the subsequent realization competition.
