Düsseldorf, 1 August 2022: The V&A presents a major exhibition on Korean culture. V&A Hallyu! The Korean Wave will showcase South Korea's dynamic pop culture from its beginnings to its place on the world stage today. The exhibition will explore the emergence of the Korean wave in cinema, drama and music, and highlight its cultural influence on the beauty and fashion industries.

Hallyu rose to prominence in the late 1990s and spread throughout Asia; it then reached all corners of the world and continues to influence the currents of global pop culture to this day.

The first part of the exhibition, "From Rubble to Smartphones", will shed light on the historical context of Hallyu's meteoric rise and how South Korea went from a country devastated by war in the late 1950s to a leading cultural force in the early 2000s in a very short time.

Düsseldorf, 1. August 2022: Das V&A zeigt eine große Ausstellung über koreanische Kultur. V&A Hallyu!

The history of Korea in the 20th century is marked by Japanese colonial rule, the territorial division that led to the Korean War, and the 27 years of military rule that followed. In the 1960s and 70s, South Korea experienced industrialisation and in 1988 the country was catapulted onto the international stage with the Summer Olympics in Seoul. In the late 1990s, IT innovations made South Korea one of the most digitally connected countries in the world.

K-Drama

Another part of the exhibition "Setting the Scene" - focuses on the success of K-drama. Highlights include the pink guard costumes and green tracksuit from the Netflix hit series Squid Game, as well as a replica of the bathroom set from Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-winning film Parasite. Rosalie Kim, curator of Hallyu! The Korean Wave, said, "South Korea has captivated the world with its vibrant and creative popular culture Hallyu, which has transformed the image of the Korean War-ravaged country into that of a leading cultural powerhouse in the world. We're excited to bring its energy and dynamism to the V&A this autumn in the first exhibition of its kind."

Gangnam Style

The exhibition will open with a well-known example of Hallyu: PSY's viral single hit "Gangnam Style" from 2012t. The song and its special dance moves became an overnight sensation, becoming the first music video to reach 1 billion views on YouTube. The video was an early example of Hallyu's international appeal, sparking a global phenomenon that inspired parodies and cover versions around the world.

Gangnam Style
