Media, 5 March 2023: Publisher of Faksimile Verlag, Charlotte Kramer, presented the first copy of the facsimile edition of the notebooks of the European universal genius Leonardo da Vinci to the Minister of Culture of France, Rima Abdul Malak at the French Embassy in Berlin.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci's death, Faksimile Verlag is publishing the Paris manuscripts as true-to-original facsimile editions. These are twelve sketchbooks and two supplement volumes, the largest collection of Leonardo da Vinci's manuscripts in the possession of the Institut de France in Paris.

What is a facsimile

The word comes from the Latin: fac simile = make it similar. A facsimile, as a faithful reproduction of a manuscript or book, requires that all visible characteristics of the original - colours, gold, silver as well as traces of age or irregularities - are also visible in the facsimile. 

The gilding

The process of gilding is also fascinating. Gold had a high symbolic value in medieval manuscripts, as a sign of immortality, the divine word, wealth and power. According to the facsimile publisher, real gold (at least 22 carat) is applied and in an additional work step a patina must be applied to the gold.

In detail

The first four volumes (Manuscript A, E and M, and Suppl. A) were produced as a facsimile edition containing notes on subjects including the art of drawing, the properties of water, weight and gravity, and geometry and botany. Manuscript A was originally more extensive, but pages 81 to 114 of the manuscript (as well as pages 91 to 100 of Manuscript B) were cut out, stolen and sold in the 1840s. It was not until 50 years later that they were returned to the Institut de France and bound separately from the original manuscripts. As a result, there is a supplement volume (Suppl. A and Suppl. B) of both Manuscript A and Manuscript B. Each facsimile edition is accompanied by a scholarly commentary volume explaining the manuscript and the miniatures. The reproductions are limited to 990 copies each.

"The publishing house was founded in 1974. The long-time publishing director Dr Manfred Kramer fought for the preservation and publication of medieval book art and European cultural heritage. Today, under the direction of his daughter Charlotte Kramer, it unites the Faksimile Verlag and the Müller & Schindler Verlag. The publishing house also has the Book of Hours of Isabella of Castile, the Book of Hours of Bona Sforza, wife of Galeazzo Maria Sforza, who was Duke of Milan from 1466 to 1476, the Prayer Book for Otto III, the only royal prayer book from the Ottonian period.

Das Universalgenie Leonardo da Vinci, Philosoph, Maler, Bildhauer, Architekt, Mechaniker und Ingenieur hielt all seine Gedanken in Notizbüchern fest. Anlässlich seines 500. Todestags publiziert der Faksimile Verlag insgesamt 12 Notizbücher und zwei Supplement-Bände in den nächsten Jahren als originalgetreue Faksimile-Editionen. Die ersten vier Bände wurden von Verlegerin Charlotte Kramer an Kulturministerin Frankreichs, Rima Abdul Malak übergeben.

März 2023: Die Verlegerin des Faksimile Verlags, Charlotte Kramer, überreichte der Kulturministerin Frankreichs, Rima Abdul Malak in der französischen Botschaft Berlin das erste Exemplar der Faksimile-Edition der Notizbücher des europäischen Universalgenies Leonardo da Vinci. Anlässlich des 500. Todestages von Leonardo da Vinci publiziert der Faksimile Verlag die Pariser Manuskripte als originalgetreue Faksimile-Editionen. Es handelt sich um zwölf Skizzenbücher und zwei Supplement-Bände, der größten Sammlung der Handschriften Leonardo da Vincis, die sich im Besitz des Institut de France in Paris befindet.

Was ist ein Faksimile

Das Wort kommt vom Lateinischen: fac simile = mache es ähnlich. Ein Faksimile, als originalgetreue Wiedergabe einer Handschrift bzw. eines Buches verlangt, dass alle sichtbaren Charakteristika des Originals – Farben, Gold, Silber sowie Altersspuren oder Unregelmäßigkeiten –auch im Faksimile sichtbar sind. 

Die Vergoldung

Faszinierend ist auch der Vorgang der Vergoldung. Gold besaß in mittelalterlichen Handschriften einen hohen Symbolwert, als Zeichen der Unvergänglichkeit, des göttlichen Wortes, des Reichtums, der Macht. Lt Angaben des Faksimile Verlages wird Echtgold (mindestens 22 Karat) aufgetragen und in einem zusätzlichen Arbeitsgang muss eine Patina auf das Gold aufgebracht werden.

Im Detail

Die ersten vier Bände (Manuskript A, E und M sowie Suppl. A) wurde als Faksimile-Edition mit Aufzeichnungen aus den Bereichen, wie u.a. der Zeichenkunst, den Eigenschaften des Wassers, Gewicht und Schwerkraft sowie Geometrie und Botanik hergestellt. Das Manuskript A war ursprünglich umfangreicher, doch wurden die Seiten 81 bis 114 der Handschrift (sowie die Seiten 91 bis 100 des Manuskripts B) in den 1840er Jahren herausgeschnitten, gestohlen und verkauft. Erst 50 Jahre später wurden sie dem Institut de France zurückgegeben und getrennt von den ursprünglichen Manuskripten gebunden. Dies hat zur Folge, dass es sowohl vom Manuskript A als auch vom Manuskript B einen Supplement-Band (Suppl. A und Suppl. B) gibt. Jede Faksimile-Ausgabe wird von einem wissenschaftlichen Kommentarband, der die Handschrift und die Miniaturen erläutert, begleitet. Es handelt sich um eine auf jeweils 990 Exemplare limitierte Reproduktion.

Der Faksimile Verlag wurde 1974 in Luzern gegründet. Der langjährige Verlagsleiter Dr. Manfred Kramer kämpfte für die Bewahrung und Veröffentlichung mittelalterlicher Buchkunst und des europäischen Kulturerbes. Heute ist der Faksimile Verlag und der Müller & Schindler Verlag unter der Leitung seiner Tochter Charlotte Kramer vereint. Der Verlag hat außerdem das Stundenbuch der Isabella von Kastilien, das Stundenbuch von Bona Sforza, Gemahlin Galeazzo Maria Sforzas, von 1466 bis 1476 Herzog von Mailand war, das Gebetbuch für Otto III, das einzige Königsgebetbuch aus ottonischer Zeit.
