Exhibition Academy Selection for young artists of the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie

The Academy Selection Award is presented for the first time.

The gallerist couple Matthias and Bärbel Kellermann will present the first Academy Selection Award for young art graduates of the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie in the summer of 2022. The two gallery owners have been visiting the exhibition Rundgang der Kunstakademie (art circuit) for decades and witnessed how much the last graduates suffered from Corona's restrictions and were therefore hardly able to have any exhibitions.

In order to promote the talents individually, the gallery owners developed the idea of an art award: the Academy Selection Award, which will be presented for the first time in 2022. A total of 12 talents were selected - graduates as well as students who come from all parts of the world. The works of the Academy Selection participants now hang in the rooms of the Kellermann Gallery in Düsseldorf's Altstadt. Thus, regardless of who eventually receives the prize, the art talents have the opportunity to catch the eye of the gallery's collectors. 

In the interview, Alethea&Art finds out how a gallery discovers new art talent - which art prevails on the art market and what it's like when a gallery owner discovers a rising star.

Also, how do you convince a collector to invest in art by an unknown artist?

Alethea&Art Magazine: How did you come up with the idea of the Academy Selection Award?

Matthias Kellermann: We wanted to present the artists of the last 3 rounds of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, which are Corona courses and were very burdened by the lockdown. The artists had just finished, wanted to go out into the world to show their art and suddenly had no possibility to exhibit. This was also true for our artist Stephie Friedrich, who graduated from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 2020. Her wonderfully museum-like exhibition at K 21 had to be closed again one week after the exhibition began.

Unfortunately, we cannot represent all the artists of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in this exhibition but we settled on 12; 3 of the artists are still studying; the others have already graduated. The winner will receive a prize of 5,000 euros, which is not tied to anything. There is no obligation for the artist to exhibit in the gallery or to give paintings to us. Of course, we offer artists a long-term collaboration if they are interested.

Alethea&Art Magazine: How is it actually with the discovery of young artists - do you follow their further careers and how many stay with art?

Matthias Kellermann: Statistically, of all the graduates of art academies, only 10% exhibit after 7 years. A large proportion of artists have to learn that they cannot establish themselves on the market with their art. 

Of course, you have to be very good to be successful - I hope that all of our 12 artists will be successful!

Alethea&Art Magazine: About the artist personality - which type prevails on the market?

Matthias Kellermann: Artist personality? It's mainly about the personality of the art. The personality of the individual is something else. It has something to do with the passion with which one feels committed to art. It is important for an artist to acquire his or her own style. In fine art, you have to be distinctive - the quality of your own handwriting is part of it.

Alethea&Art Magazine: And how do you convince your collectors to buy young art?

Matthias Kellermann: People who are interested in art are always interested in learning about something new and who is currently setting new accents. But the more a collector knows, the higher the standards he naturally sets. 

Alethea&Art Magazine: What criteria were used to select the artists for the Academy Selection Award?

Matthias Kellermann: In addition to concentrating on painting, we selected artists who we think already have a significant signature of their own and can assert themselves on the market in the long term.  A painting alone does not make an artist - there is no one-image-wonder, as is perhaps the case in music - this too is actually tragic.

Alethea&Art Magazine: What significance does the degree from the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie have in Germany or even in the world?

Matthias Kellermann: Does an artist need an academic degree to be significant? Not necessarily. You can't learn a certain creativity. The academy offers a basis for exchange with artist friends and for sharpening one's own profile. The main reason why you should study art is to find your own way to art. It's also about passion - if you know you want to make art, want to be an artist and nothing else - then put everything into being able to study art.

I'm afraid, however, that the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf does not have a unique selling point worldwide. There are over 24 academies in Germany. The Kunstakademie has a unique history and great professors, but you can't rest on your laurels. I think it would be presumptuous to place one academy above the other.

You can't hype a work of art

Alethea&Art Magazine: How do you see your role as a gallery owner?

Matthias Kellermann: You can't make an artist great who doesn't make himself great; you can't hype a work of art. The artist must have created something significant that can leave a mark in art history. You can also be a shooting star, but if your work is only hyped up, you will be gone after 10 years. The artist must grow with his work.

Alethea&Art Magazine: Can you tell us about an artist for whom this was the case?

Matthias Kellermann: Every artist needs the right partner at the right stage. The artists who make an international career are poached by the big international galleries, which have a considerable budget and branches in Paris, London, New York, Tokyo or Shanghai.

We exhibited Marcus Jansen, who has become one of the most important American artists of our time. His works have gone through a great evolution in value and the works we sold to our collectors are now worth many times more - they have a substance that will never disappear.

Alethea&Art Magazine: How did your path into art actually begin?

Matthias Kellermann: I have been in art for over 30 years. I started at Arsmundi, where I was involved in replicating art history. So I took a deep journey through the history of art and have now arrived in the present. 

Ms Kellermann: I am a communication designer. At first we wanted an online art portal. But I wanted to have a place to meet and so 10 years ago we founded the Galerie am Belsenplatz and in 2019 we will open the second gallery on Heinrich Heine Allee. We show over 20 artists in the gallery in the old town, large-format art and do exhibition openings. In Oberkassel, we show classics that we offer on the secondary market, such as Dalí, Miró, Picasso.

If the collector thinks it's actually the artist talking to him, then you've done your thing right.

Alethea&Art Magazine: Can you tell me what the key to a successful gallery is?

Matthias Kellermann: It takes passion for art that you live and let people feel. You should be able to transfer your passion to the collector - to transfer the essential and the fascination for the picture to him. Everyone is interested in a different kind of art - you have to pick up the viewer there and create a connection between the artist and the collector.

Our collectors always like to come back to us. If the collector thinks it's actually the artist talking to them, then you've done your thing right.

Das Galeristenpaar Matthias und Bärbel Kellermann vergibt im Sommer 2022 den ersten Academy Selection Award für junge Kunstabsolventen der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Die beiden Galeristen besuchen seit Jahrzehnten den Kunstrundgang der Akademie und konnten miterleben, wie sehr die letzten Jahrgänge unter den Einschränkungen von Corona litten und dementsprechend kaum Ausstellungen mehr haben konnten.

Um die Talente individuell zu fördern, entwickelten die Galeristen die Idee eines Kunstpreises: Den im Jahr 2022 erstmals verliehenen Academy Selection Award. Insgesamt 12 Talente wurden ausgewählt - Absolventen als auch Studenten, die aus allen Teilen der Welt kommen. Die Werke der Teilnehmer der Academy Selection hängen jetzt in den Räumen der Galerie Kellermann in der Düsseldorfer Altstadt. So haben die Kunsttalente, unabhängig davon, wer schließlich den Preis erhält, die Möglichkeit, den Sammlern der Galerie aufzufallen. 

Im Interview erfährt Alethea&Art wie eine Galerie neue Kunsttalente entdeckt - welche Kunst sich am Kunstmarkt durchsetzt und wie es ist, wenn ein Galerist einen aufgehenden Star entdeckt. Ausserdem - wie kann man eigentlich einen Sammler überzeugen, in Kunst eines unbekannten Künstlern zu investieren?

Alethea&Art Magazine: Wie kamen Sie auf die Idee des Academy Selection Award?

Matthias Kellermann: Wir wollten die Künstler der letzten 3 Rundgänge der Kunstakademie präsentieren, die Corona Lehrgänge sind und vom Lockdown sehr belastet wurden. Die Künstler waren gerade fertig geworden, wollten in die Welt hinausgehen, um ihre Kunst zu zeigen und hatten plötzlich keine Möglichkeit mehr, auszustellen.

Dies traf auch auf unsere Künstlerin Stephie Friedrich zu, die 2020 den Abschluss an der Kunstakademie machte. Ihre wundervoll museale Ausstellung im K 21 musste eine Woche nach Ausstellungsbeginn wieder geschlossen werden.

Leider können wir in dieser Ausstellung nicht alle Künstler der Kunstakademie repräsentieren sondern wir legten uns auf 12 fest; 3 der Künstler studieren noch; die anderen haben ihren Abschluss bereits.

Der Gewinner wird einen Preis von 5.000 Euro erhalten, der an nichts gebunden ist. Es gibt für den Künstler keine Verpflichtung, in der Galerie auszustellen oder Bilder an uns abzugeben. Natürlich bieten wir Künstlern eine langfristige Zusammenarbeit an, falls sie interessiert sind.

Alethea&Art Magazine: Wie ist das eigentlich mit der Entdeckung der jungen Künstler - verfolgen Sie deren weitere Karrieren und wieviele bleiben bei der Kunst?

Matthias Kellermann: Statistisch gesehen stellen von allen Absolventen von Kunstakademien nach Ablauf von 7 Jahren nur noch 10 % aus. Ein großer Teil der Künstler muss erfahren, dass sie sich mit ihrer Kunst nicht am Markt etablieren können. 

Man muss natürlich sehr gut sein um sich durchzusetzen - von unseren 12 Künstlern hoffe ich, dass sich alle durchsetzen!

Alethea&Art Magazine: Zur Künstlerpersönlichkeit - welcher Typ setzt sich am Markt durch?

Matthias Kellermann: Künstlerpersönlichkeit? Es geht vor allem um die Persönlichkeit der Kunst. Die Persönlichkeit des Individuums ist etwas anderes. Es hat etwas mit Leidenschaft zu tun, mit der man sich der Kunst verpflichtet fühlt.

Wichtig ist, dass ein Künstler seinen eigenen Stil erlangt. In der bildenden Kunst muss man markant sein - die Qualität der eigenen Handschrift gehört dazu.

Alethea&Art Magazine: Und wie überzeugen Sie Ihre Sammler, junge Kunst zu kaufen?

Matthias Kellermann: Kunstinteressierte Menschen sind immer daran interessiert, etwas Neues kennenzulernen und zu erfahren, wer gerade neue Akzente setzt. Aber je mehr ein Sammler kennt, desto höhere Maßstäbe setzt er natürlich an. 

Alethea&Art Magazine: Nach welchen Kriterien wurden die Künstler für den Academy Selection Award ausgewählt?

Matthias Kellermann: Neben der Konzentration auf Malerei haben wir Künstler ausgesucht, von denen wir denken, dass Sie bereits eine signifikant eigene Handschrift besitzen und sich langfristig auf dem Markt durchsetzen können. 

Ein Bild allein macht noch keinen Künstler - es gibt kein One-Bild-wonder, so wie das vielleicht in der Musik der Fall ist - auch dies ist eigentlich tragisch.

Alethea&Art Magazine: Welche Bedeutung hat der Abschluss an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Deutschland oder auch in der Welt?

Matthias Kellermann: Braucht ein Künstler einen akademischen Abschluss, um bedeutend zu sein? Nicht unbedingt. Eine gewisse Kreativität kann man nicht erlernen. Die Akademie bietet eine Basis für den Austausch mit Künstlerfreunden und die Schärfung des eigenen Profils. Der Hauptgrund, weshalb man Kunst studieren sollte, ist, seinen eigenen Weg zur Kunst zu finden.

Es geht auch um Leidenschaft - wenn Sie wissen, dass Sie Kunst machen wollen, Künstler werden wollen und nichts anderes - dann setzen Sie alles daran, Kunst studieren zu können.

Ich fürchte allerdings, dass die Kunstakademie Düsseldorf weltweit kein Alleinstellungsmerkmal hat. Es gibt in Deutschland über 24 Akademien. Die Kunstakademie Düsseldorf hat eine einzigartige Geschichte und großartige Professoren, aber man darf sich auf den Lorbeeren nicht ausruhen. Ich glaube es wäre vermessen, eine Akademie über die andere zu stellen.

Sie können kein Kunstwerk hypen

Alethea&Art Magazine: Wie sehen Sie Ihre Rolle als Galerist?

Matthias Kellermann: Sie können keinen Künstler groß machen, der sich nicht selbst groß macht; Sie können kein Kunstwerk hypen. Der Künstler muss etwas Bedeutendes geschaffen haben, das Spuren in der Kunstgeschichte hinterlassen kann. 

Sie können auch ein Shooting Star sein, aber wenn Ihr Werk nur hochgefeiert wird, werden Sie nach 10 Jahren verschwunden sein. Der Künstler muss mit seinem Werk wachsen.

Alethea&Art Magazine: Können Sie von einem Künstler berichten, bei dem dies der Fall war?

Matthias Kellermann: Zu jedem Künstler gehört in der jeweiligen Phase der richtige Partner. Die Künstler, die international Karriere machen, werden von den großen internationalen Galerien abgeworben, die ein erhebliches Budget und Dependancen in Paris, London, New York, Tokio oder Shanghai haben.

Wir hatten Marcus Janßen ausgestellt, der zu einem der bedeutendsten amerikanischen Künstler unserer Zeit geworden ist. Seine Werke haben eine große Wertentwicklung durchgemacht und die Werke, die wir an unsere Sammler verkauften, sind heute ein Vielfaches wert - sie haben eine Substanz, die nie mehr verschwinden wird.

Alethea&Art Magazine: Wie hat Ihr Weg in die Kunst eigentlich begonnen?

Matthias Kellermann: Ich bin seit über 30 Jahren in der Kunst. Ich fing bei Arsmundi an, wo ich mich mit Replikation der Kunstgeschichte beschäftigte. Ich machte also eine Tiefen-Reise durch die Geschichte der Kunst und bin jetzt in der Gegenwart angelangt. 

Frau Kellermann: Ich bin Kommunikations Designerin. Zunächst wollten wir ein Online-Kunstportal. Aber ich wollte einen Ort der Begegnung haben und so haben wir vor 10 Jahren die Galerie am Belsenplatz gegründet und 2019 die zweite Galerie an der Heinrich Heine Allee eröffnet.

Wir zeigen über 20 Künstler in der Galerie in der Altstadt, grossformatige Kunst und machen Ausstellungseröffnungen. In Oberkassel zeigen wir Klassiker, die wir am sekundären Markt anbieten, wie Dalí, Miró, Picasso.

Wenn der Sammler denkt, dass eigentlich der Künstler zu ihm spricht, dann haben Sie Ihre Sache richtig gemacht.

Alethea&Art Magazine: Können Sie mir sagen, was der Schlüssel zu einer erfolgreichen Galerie ist?

Matthias Kellermann: Es gehört Leidenschaft für die Kunst dazu, die man lebt und die man spüren lässt. 

Sie sollten in der Lage sein, ihre Leidenschaft auf die Sammler zu übertragen - das Essentielle und die Faszination an dem Bild auf ihn übertragen. Jeder interessiert sich für eine andere Art für Kunst - Sie müssen den Betrachter dort abholen und eine Verbindung zwischen dem Künstler und dem Sammler schaffen.

Unsere Sammler kommen immer wieder gerne zu uns zurück. Wenn der Sammler denkt, dass eigentlich der Künstler zu ihm spricht, dann haben Sie Ihre Sache richtig gemacht.
