Invictus Games in Düsseldorf: A first insight
At the opening press conference, politician Siemtje Möller confessed that it had been a deep wish in the Ministry of Defence to be allowed to host the Games in Germany. It was necessary to give visibility to the wounded soldiers and their families and to manifest their acceptance in society. The opening ceremony on Saturday had many important speakers such as Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (per video) and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius. Highlights were, of course, the speeches by Lord Mayor Dr Stephan Keller and Prince Harry. It became highly emotional when the different nations marched in. There was a minute‘s silence, during which a flag was raised and a candle was lit in memory of those who had died. This was followed by a dance by deaf dancers and an encouraging video to never give up. Then US singer Macklemore performed; he said „Can‘t Hold Us“ would embody the Invictus Spirit for him. The hall went totally crazy, people jumped from their seats and danced in the arena, holding each other in their arms…
And many Düsseldorfers and guests who had travelled to the event were fighting tears, so highly emotional was the event. Of course, international glamour is provided by Prince Harry, but there is no doubt that the athletes and their families and supporters play the main role here. The first day saw many competitions, fuelled by loud music. Some of the judges are highly decorated generals, ambassadors and government officials from around the world. The good news. You can still visit the arena all week long.
