Düsseldorf, 6 September 2022: Today Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan visited Düsseldorf, the venue for the 2023 Invictus Games, which are being prepared there by the German Armed Forces. Alethea Magazine was on hand to welcome the couple in front of the famous blue door of the city hall by the Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf, Dr Stephan Keller, Brigadier General Alfred Marstaller, Siemtje Möller, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, and Lieutenant General Markus Laubenthal, Deputy Chief of the Ministry of Defence. They then signed the city's Golden Book and travelled by ship, accompanied by dignitaries, participants, volunteers and Families & Friends of the Bundeswehr, to the Merkur Arena, where a press conference was held.

There, Prince Harry first apologised for speaking in English. As the Games will take place in exactly 1 year and 3 years, he would already be counting the days. He was pleased to announce that preparations for the Games were in full swing. He was impressed beyond measure and convinced that next year's Games would go well. He said the Federal Government and the Armed Forces were strong, committed partners and he had enjoyed the warm reception in the city.

Excerpts from Prince Harry's speech at the Merkur Arena on 6 September 2022: "I believe that showing respect and appreciation is as important as experiencing respect. That is the spirit we bring to Düsseldorf.

For those who have risked their lives for their country to protect us. For those who have suffered physical and emotional trauma because of their service, and for the families who have made the sacrifice for this way of life. Every day anew. These games are for you.

From the first day they put on the uniform, the men and women who represent our service community are prepared for unimaginable physical and mental stress.

They have fought for their lives, our lives, our freedoms and our democracy. They are my role models! Nothing can, has or will stop that.

They inspire their communities and they inspire the world and you, your commitment to a goal greater than yourself.

I have long believed that the soldier community deserves to be cheered as much as the most popular football teams. Our philosophy is to fill stadiums and arenas with fans, families and of course friends. It's about making every corner of the world cheer and pay attention.

I think because the ministry often exists in the shadows, we take for granted how many ministry members put their lives on the line for us every day. That's why I know in my heart that we should put them in the spotlight.

Whenever we can. A place of competition. A place where we are cheered on. A place to be seen to be truly appreciated.

Giving up is not an option. That's what it says in bold letters on the Rheinbahn car that will travel through the tunnels of the city's streets from today until 16 September 2023. That is what we are all about. The participants and their families never give up. They are the epitome of resilience. And that is a lesson for all of us. (...)"

------------

Merkur-Arena, where Prince Harry hold this speech @IG23

At the Invictus Games 2023, from 9 to 16 September 2023, around 500 wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women from 21 nations and around 1,000 Family & Friends will come together in Düsseldorf to compete in a friendly sporting competition. They share the fate of having suffered an injury in action or being affected by illness. They are fighting their way back to life and the Games, the idea of which came from Prince Harry, want to make a contribution to this. The German Armed Forces have chosen the motto "Am Home For Respect", which is to be broadcast throughout Germany from Düsseldorf. Lord Mayor Dr Stephan Keller said: "Düsseldorf lives respect. In one of the largest federal states, Düsseldorf as the state capital stands united behind the statement: Commitment deserves respect - for all those who serve in uniform. With our excellent infrastructure and the Merkur Spiel-Arena, Düsseldorf is well equipped to offer more than 500 athletes and their families a unique experience."

----------

The Games have become an important event because it brings soldiers and their fates to the fore for the first time; not in an accusatory way, but in the positive light of a beautiful sporting event. Soldiers are also coming out of their shadows since the abolition of compulsory military service.

It is hoped that the Games will become one of the highlights of next year's Düsseldorf with a broadcast of their values for the whole of Germany.

-------------
