King Frederick II of Prussia, who was nicknamed "the Great" by history, was also one of the greatest porcelain lovers of all time. In 1763 Frederick acquired the Berlin porcelain manufactory from the merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. He named it KÖNIGLICHE PORZELLAN-MANUFAKTUR BERLIN - better known today as KPM.

From then on, the king had his own manufactory where he could order according to his personal wishes and was no longer dependent on the manufactory in Meissen, Saxony. There the Berliners recruited the modeller Friedrich Elias Meyer, a pupil of the legendary Meissen model master Johann Joachim Kändler. Meyer gave Friederzian porcelain the lightness and elegance for which it was to become famous.

Frederick the Great wanted to furnish his residences with appropriate porcelain services, for which Meyer ultimately supplied the designs. The king also wanted his own service for the city palace in Breslau, Silesia. For this purpose, Meyer created the Antikzierrat form in 1767, which is known today as ROCAILLE. The surface is decorated with colourful naturalistic flowers framed by a blue scale mosaic and gold painting. The service for the Wroclaw City Palace remains one of the most elegant decorations in the history of porcelain.

The Hetjens Museum

At regular intervals, a porcelain table is laid in the Hetjens Museum with a wide variety of inspirations from noble brands such as Hermes porcelain, Meissen, antique egg cups or other inspirations.

The Hetjens - German Ceramics Museum is located in one of the most important historical buildings in Düsseldorf's old town, the Palais Nesselrode - a few minutes' walk from the banks of the Rhine and Burgplatz. It is one of Düsseldorf's world-class museums and displays ceramics from 8000 years ago and from all over the world. Currently, the exhibition Dieter Nuhr: Reisezeit - Zeitreisen is still on display in the museum. The cabaret artist had photographed ceramics and painted them with digital painting.
