Dusseldorf, Oct. 7, 2022-The Centre de la Photographie de Mougins opened July 3, 2021, and says it aims to support artists, whether French or foreign, emerging or established.  Until Oct. 16, 2022, the Centre will exhibit English photographer Tom Wood. His photographs capture a specific moment in England's social and political history, the deindustrialization of the country, and set a body of work that is unparalleled in contemporary photography.

Tom Wood's work now encompasses "historical" series, immersing the viewer in the atmosphere of Thatcher England and post-Thatcherism. A sharp wind had long since begun to blow in Liverpool. A series of events, such as the closure of the shipyards testify to an era, a war, and a class of which soon few traces remain.

Düsseldorf, 7. Oktober 2022: Das Centre de la Photographie de Mougins wurde am 3. Juli 2021 eröffnet und möchte nach eigenen Angaben Künstler unterstützen, unabhängig davon, ob es sich um französische oder ausländische, aufstrebende oder etablierte Künstler handelt.  Noch bis zum 16.10. 2022 stellt das Centre den englischen Fotografen Tom Wood aus. Seine Fotografien erfassen einen bestimmten Moment in der sozialen und politischen Geschichte Englands, die Deindustrialisierung des Landes und setzen ein Werk, das in der zeitgenössischen Fotografie seinesgleichen sucht. Tom Woods Werk umfasst mittlerweile "historische" Serien, und lässt den Betrachter in die Atmosphäre des Thatcher-Englands und Post-Thatcherismus eintauchen. Schon seit langem hatte ein scharfer Wind in Liverpool zu wehen begonnen. Eine Reihe von Ereignissen, wie die Schließung der Werften zeugen von einer Epoche, eines Krieges, und einer Klasse, von der bald nur noch wenige Spuren übrig sind.

Série Cammell Laird by Tom Wood

Beginning in 1985, the DPA (the British Archive of Documentary Photography) commissioned several photographers to document various aspects of British society in the northwest of England: Housing, Work, Leisure. Tom Wood visits the Cammell Laird shipyard, a historic institution on Merseyside, as it is about to close. Tom Wood's photographs cover a period from 1993 to 1996.

Ab 1985 beauftragte die DPA (das britische Archiv für Dokumentarfotografie) mehrere Fotografen damit, verschiedene Aspekte der britischen Gesellschaft im Nordwesten Englands zu dokumentieren: Wohnen, Arbeit, Freizeit. Tom Wood besucht die Werft der Cammell Laird, einer historischen Institution in Merseyside, als diese geschlossen werden soll. Tom Woods Fotografien decken einen Zeitraum von 1993 bis 1996 ab.

Tom Wood

Irishman Tom Wood (b. 1951) took photographs almost every day. After studying art at Leicester Polytechnic from 1973 to 1976, he moved to Merseyside with his family in 1978. Fascinated by experimental film, he decided to take up photography. With a Leica 35, he roamed Liverpool and the banks of the Mersey from 1972 to the present, drawing a portrait of the city and its inhabitants: streets, pubs, clubs, markets, construction sites, parks and soccer stadiums. This unagitated portrait of the lower classes amidst vast industrial wastelands and brownfields sets a body of work unparalleled in contemporary photography.

Tom Wood's work has been shown in several solo exhibitions. In France, it has been shown at festivals, as part of the Sit Down gallery, or at the Centre photographique GwinZegal in Guingamp (2012) and the Château d'Eau in Toulouse (2005). His works have been included in the collections of MoMA and ICP in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In 2002, Tom Wood was awarded the "Prix Dialogue de l'Humanité" at the Rencontres d'Arles.

Der Ire Tom Wood (geb. 1951) fotografierte fast jeden Tag. Nachdem er von 1973 bis 1976 am Polytechnikum in Leicester Kunst studiert hatte, zog er mit seiner Familie 1978 nach Merseyside. Fasziniert vom Experimentalfilm, entschied er sich für die Fotografie. Mit einer Leica 35 durchstreifte er Liverpool und die Ufer des Mersey von 1972 bis heute und zeichnet dabei ein Porträt der Stadt und ihrer Bewohner: Straßen, Pubs, Clubs, Märkte, Baustellen, Parks und Fußballstadien. Dieses unaufgeregte Porträt der unteren Schichten inmitten von großen Industriebrachen und Brachland setzt ein Werk, das in der zeitgenössischen Fotografie seinesgleichen sucht.

Tom Woods Arbeit wurde in mehreren Einzelausstellungen gezeigt. In Frankreich wurde er auf Festivals gezeigt, im Rahmen der Galerie Sit Down oder auch im Centre photographique GwinZegal in Guingamp (2012) und im Château d'Eau in Toulouse (2005). Seine Werke wurden in die Sammlungen des MoMA und des ICP in New York, des Art Institute of Chicago und des Victoria & Albert Museum in London aufgenommen. Im Jahr 2002 wurde Tom Wood bei den Rencontres d'Arles mit dem "Prix Dialogue de l'Humanité" ausgezeichnet.
