April 2024: Cologne-based Taschen Verlag is known for its meticulous retrospectives. Its latest art book "Marc Newson. Works 84 - 24", which has just been launched in London, is an excellent catalogue raisonné of the Australian designer's work. Marc Newson can certainly be described as a genius. His oeuvre, which spans over four decades, covers all categories, be it interiors, watches, fashion, technology, transport and travel. Many objects from "Marc Newson. Works 84 - 24" will be familiar from everyday life, such as the Cognac bottle for HENNESSY from 2015 or the Task Chair for Knoll.

"Marc Newson. Works 84 - 24" traces his rise to design superstardom. From designs for the Lockheed Lounge to the interior of the Quantas Airbus A380. The author is Alison Castle, who is responsible for other mammoth projects at Taschen Verlag, such as The Stanley Kubrick Archives and Linda McCartney's Life in Photography. "Marc Newson needs no introduction," she explains, getting straight to the point. For each work in "Marc Newson. Works 84 - 24", there is a detailed history of its creation. The book is therefore not just an informative and entertaining retrospective of the design history of the last few decades, but is also very helpful for design students.

A love of design and aesthetics from childhood

Newson tells his biographer that he always admired his mother's sense of style. The designer goes on to reveal that things like Marimekko fabrics, Danese Milano and Enzo Mari's Timor inspired him from an early age.

Newson's success began with the Lockheed Lounge, which he started working on in 1984. The graduate of the Sydney College of the Arts had won an AUD 10,000 scholarship from the Craft Council. This enabled him to develop his talent. The commissioned work Lounge was produced for the well-known Australian art gallery, Roslyn Oxley9. Highly acclaimed in the press, the silhouette of the Lounge references Jacques-Louis David's Madame Récamier. The aluminium sheets point to Newson's fascination with aviation and the Lockheed name as a nod to the aircraft manufacturer.

The way to the top: Apple

After many other successes, Newson moved to London in 1997, where he founded his own company Marc Newson Ltd together with his business partner Benjamin de Haan. In 2014, he joined Apple as Senior Vice President of Design. In June 2019, Newson joined Jony Ive's LoveFrom, the legendary design consultancy that Ive founded after leaving Apple. In 2021, it was announced that the two creatives would be working together on a Ferrari electric car. Newson is also the only industrial designer ever to be represented by New York art gallery Larry Gagosian.

The legendary book stands

There had already been a collaboration between Newton and Taschen Verlag in 2019. Benedikt Taschen had asked him to design one of the legendary Taschen book stands. Newson's sculptural design pays homage to the Ferrari engine. The designer: "The engine is what they were always famous for. The cars were in many ways just vehicles for the engine, if you'll excuse the pun. Historically, the rest of the car was virtually useless and was built that way because they were built to race for a season or two and then they were largely discarded in favour of the next best thing."

For fashion lovers

But fashion lovers are not neglected in the book either. Newton's designs for Azzedine Alaïa, who was a close friend, are pictured. The 12-year collaboration with G-STAR is also shown, as well as iconic pieces such as accessories, luggage and perfume bottles created in collaboration with Louis Vuitton. Newson had also designed several perfume bottles over the years, but the 1992 Shiseido Basala bottle was the only one produced. Instead of looking for a new shape, he decided to take the classic apothecary bottle as a starting point.

Even an own watch company

With a business partner, watch enthusiast Oliver Ike, a Swiss furniture dealer, Newson founded the watch company Ikepod. In 1996, they launched their first product on the market: the Seaslug. Unfortunately, Newson left the company in 2012, which continued to produce watches inspired solely by Newson's original designs. Shortly after his collaboration with Ikepod ended, however, he began working with Jony Ive's Apple design team. The Apple Watch they designed together features several Ikepod-influenced contributions, including the sports band.
