Düsseldorf, 11 August 2022: London's Hamiltons Gallery shows exquisite floral still lifes by the two masters Richard Learoyd & Irving Penn. The Hamiltons Gallery's collaboration with Irving Penn and later with his foundation spans three decades. The gallery now brings together the work of Penn, who was one of the most renowned photographers of his time, with that of contemporary British photographer Richard Learoyd. The exhibition is a must-see for all flower lovers and for admirers of photography that is on the level of painting. The Flowers exhibition presents an extraordinary vision of the beauty of nature combined with the masterful photographic skills of the artists. The flower 'portraits' by both artists are intensely beautiful and equally full of unusual angles.

The work of Richard Learoyd:
Learoyd's work follows a historic photographic process. His direct-positive colour prints are made in the studio with a custom-built camera obscura, consisting of two dark chambers and a fixed lens that exposes light directly onto light-sensitive Ilfochrome paper.
Learoyd captures the peak of beauty before the inevitable decay sets in, giving the flowers such an immortal character. "For me, my flower paintings are an exercise in balance. An arrangement of mass and colour in space. A compositional conundrum about how wrong an image can be before it tips over to the edge of silliness. Flowers only last a day or two once they are uprooted. These images explore the beauty of ageing and decay. They measure the old and the new. When I look at them, I measure their success simply by how they feel, how they convey the fragile nature of life and the inevitability of an end."

Irving Penn
American Vogue commissioned annual portfolios of images, each dedicated to a flower, as Christmas gifts for readers. Irving Penn was commissioned to take portraits of "Lust for Tulips" in 1967; poppies were the next subject in 1968. Irving Penn photographed seven Vogue issues featuring different types of flowers. The photographs were published as the book "Flowers", which is now one of Penn's rarest books. In total, Penn produced 42 editions of flowers during his lifetime.
The prints by Penn shown in this exhibition are mostly dye transfer prints, a particular technical printing process that makes these photographs stand out even more. Prints from each of these editions were exhibited at Hamiltons Gallery in 2015 for the first and only time to date.
