“The goal is not to dominate a space, but to enhance it in a refined, thoughtful, and meaningful way.”
December 2025: While Christmas stalls were being erected at Schadowplatz, an invitation from artist Regina Schumann arrived: an evening at Basalte. Curiosity led us to the restrained, cool elegance of the office building near Königsallee. A small, carefully selected circle – architects, designers, craftsmen and specialists familiar with Basalte – had been invited to discover the artist’s new light works in the showroom.
When the lights were dimmed, the quiet magic revealed itself: Basalte’s almost invisible technology – intuitive control, reduced forms, exquisite materials – and Regina Schumann’s luminous, space-defining creations entered into an immediate, harmonious dialogue. Her fluorescent acrylic panels, coloured Polylight cords and pigments respond to ambient light and the showroom’s subtle illumination with an intensity that is at once restrained and overwhelming. The installations appear as autonomous light sources in an alien, almost extraterrestrial space – a “configuration of room temperature”, as Schumann describes it.
Regina Schumann, born in Goslar and trained at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig, moves fluidly between installation, painting, sculpture and relief. She connects apparent opposites: light and colour, materiality and perception. Her works are held in international collections, and her exhibitions span Germany, Spain, the United States, Japan, Colombia and beyond. She lives and works in Cologne.
“At Basalte, we have always seen technology as something that should be felt rather than noticed."
Basalte and Schumann share a profound affinity for reduction and the subtle power of light. Both work with high-quality materials and precise lines; both seek to integrate technology and aesthetics in a way that enhances rather than dominates space and experience. Elie Bau, Marketing Manager at Basalte, explains: “At Basalte, we have always seen technology as something that should be felt rather than noticed. When planning the opening of our flagship showroom in Düsseldorf, we wanted to go beyond a classic product presentation and create an experience that reflects our philosophy: timeless design, intuitive smart home intelligence, and a strong connection to architecture.”
The collaboration grew organically. Basalte first encountered Schumann’s work during a video shoot in a Cologne private residence. Schumann, in turn, became aware of Basalte through the same video. Bau: “Interestingly, the connection worked both ways: Regine had also seen her work appear in the video and became curious about Basalte. Through this mutual interest, we got to know each other and quickly discovered a strong conceptual and aesthetic match. Her work explores perception, materiality, and the interaction between light and space – topics that resonate deeply with our own approach to design.”
Brand collaborations with artists are no longer unusual in the luxury and design world. They serve less as advertising than as a deepening of identity: a brand like Basalte, which seeks to make technology invisible, finds in an artist like Schumann a partner who makes light visible and palpable. Such partnerships create spaces where product and art illuminate each other – inviting the viewer to reflect on materiality, perception and atmosphere. Bau: “The parallels are very clear.
Both Regine Schumann’s art and our products are rooted in subtlety, precision, and a strong sensory experience. Light is never treated as mere illumination, it becomes a medium that shapes atmosphere, emotion, and the way a space is perceived. We both work with clean, architectural lines and with carefully selected, high-quality and exclusive materials. In Regine Schumann’s case, acrylic and colour are refined to their essence; in our case, materials are reduced to their purest form. Another important parallel is intention.
Both Regine Schumann’s work and what we do at Basalte aim to enrich the life of the homeowner – making everyday living more comfortable, more intuitive, and ultimately more luxurious. Her artworks subtly transform a space through light and colour, while our products quietly support comfort and ease. In both cases, the goal is not to dominate a space, but to enhance it in a refined, thoughtful, and meaningful way.”
