Düsseldorf, 29 June 2022: With a selection of central sculptures and drawings from the last two decades, the ALBERTINA Vienna pays tribute for the first time to the work of the artist Tony Cragg, who was born in Liverpool in 1949 and lives in Wuppertal.

In his sculptural work, there is a development from figurative to abstracted form, whereby the artist's use of materials such as fibreglass and Kevlar alongside wood, stone and stainless steel leads to a very differently perceivable presence of sculpture in space.

Since the 1990s, Cragg has also turned to drawing, which can be both a sketch and an expression of reflections on questions of form and content. The artist also likes to work in series in which he deals with the respective representational and abstract motifs.

About the artist:

According to Capital magazine's Art Compass, which has been identifying the most important contemporary artists worldwide for 50 years, Tony Cragg ranks 7th in the Top 100 Contemporary Artists.

Known for his use of unconventional materials, Tony Cragg has received numerous honours: In 1988, for example, he was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize. He has also been a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London since 1994 and a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin since 2002.

From 2009 to 2013, he was rector of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In 2016, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

His sculpture park "Waldfrieden" in his adopted home of Wuppertal has become one of the art destinations in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The exhibition was arranged, among others, by the Association for Art in Public (AAP), founded by the Düsseldorf gallery owner Dirk Geuer. This foundation has, for example, made it possible for the Heinz Mack exhibition to take part in the 2022 Venice Biennale. Dirk Geuer has been associated with the Albertina Museum for a long time and has donated editions of works by Jörg Immendorff and Julian Schnabel, among others.

ALBERTINA

The ALBERTINA is an art museum in the heart of Vienna and houses the largest collection of graphic art in the world. The ALBERTINA was named after its founder, the art collector Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, grandson of August the Strong.

A catalogue will be published for the exhibition with Tony Craig.
