1 July 2022: The £25,000 Charles Wollaston Award has been presented to artist Uta Kögelsberger for her video work CULL in the Royal Academy's 254th Summer Exhibition. Established in 1978, the award, given for the "most outstanding work" in the exhibition, is one of the most prestigious art prizes awarded in the UK.

CULL follows the mammoth task of cleaning up after the devastating effects of the wildfires. It shows the efforts of the teams responsible for cutting down the dead trees that now threaten the remaining buildings and roads. In a swan song to the unique ecosystem that has been lost, each tree is documented as it falls to the ground seemingly out of nowhere, even that sometimes the earth shakes beneath it.

CULL is embedded in the broader, ongoing Fire Complex project that Kögelsberger initiated after the Castle Fire destroyed 174000 acres of the Sequoia National Forest in California, including an estimated 14% of the world's redwood population. The aim of Fire Complex is to create momentum and resources for the regeneration of these forests. It is a project that communicates a universal need and aims to make a difference for the future. It includes a community reforestation project that has planted over 6500 new trees to date.

This aspect of the Fire Complex was developed in collaboration with USDA Forest Services, Cal Fire, Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, the communities of Sequoia Crest, Alpine Village and Cedar Slope, and with the help of volunteers from the Rotary Club and local schools. The work was developed with support from Newcastle University, Alchemy Media (USA), Standard Vision (USA) and Buildhollywood (UK) and has been exhibited in the UK and Los Angeles.

About the Charles Wollaston Award

The Royal Academy of Arts' annual Charles Wollaston Award was established in 1978 with a donation from Charles Wollaston (1914-1992), who was a great supporter of the RA and a lecturer in art. Following his death, the RA received a substantial bequest which enabled it to endow the £25,000 award in perpetuity.
