Subtle little helpers in Calm Technology

Düsseldorf, 31 July 2022: Google is experimenting with a series of objects that subtly transmit small notifications. You can't buy the objects yet, but you can get a taste of what little helpers you can have in your home in the future.

The Little Signals design study was conducted by Google in collaboration with industrial design consultancy Map Project Office. The project includes six objects that convey information in a completely new way - through movement, light signals, air blasts or even just shadows. The design does not appear technical, but the objects look like small toys in soothing pastel colours that make them resemble kitchen appliances.

Düsseldorf, 31 Juli 2022: Google experimentiert mit einer Reihe von Objekten, die auf subtile Weise kleine Benachrichtigungen übermitteln. Man kann die Objekte noch nicht kaufen, aber einen Vorgeschmack darauf erhalten, welche kleinen Helfer man zukünftig in seinem Heim haben kann.

Die Designstudie Little Signals wurden von Google in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Beratungsunternehmen für Industriedesign Map Project Office, durchgeführt. Das Projekt umfasst sechs Objekte, die Informationen auf ganz neue Weise übermitteln - durch Bewegung, Lichtsignale, Luftstöße oder sogar nur durch Schatten. Das Design wirkt nicht technisch, sondern die Objekte wirken wie kleines Spielzeug in beruhigenden Pastellfarben, die sie an Küchengeräte erinnern lassen.

Google and Map Project Office has created its own small website where the Little Signals are presented. Everything is still open, in the research phase and you can't buy anything. At its core, it's about how the relationship between people and technology might evolve. 

The founders also want to encourage their readers to conduct their own experiments and you can find instructions on how to make these objects yourself.

The website also tells us that Little Signals is based on the so-called Calm Technology. Clicking on the link leads you to a book recommendation:

THE COMING AGE OF CALM TECHNOLOGY, written by computer specialists Mark Weiser and John Seely Brown, who worked at Xerox PARC at the time. In their book, written in 1996, Mark Weiser and John Seely Brown describe Calm Technology as "something that informs us but does not require our attention". The interaction between technology and people is said to be designed to take place in the periphery, rather than being the focus of attention.

Google und Map Project Office hat eine eigene kleine Website geschaffen, wo die Little Signals vorgestellt werden. Alles ist noch offen, in der Forschungsphase und man kann nichts kaufen. Im Kern geht es darum, wie sich die Beziehung von Mensch und Technologie weiterentwickeln könnte. 

Die Gründer möchten ihre Leser auch anregen, selbst Experimente durchzuführen und man findet Anleitungen darüber, wie man diese Objekte selbst basteln kann.

In ihrem Buch, dass bereits 1996 verfasst wurde, beschreiben Mark Weiser und John Seely Brown die Ruhige Technologie als "etwas, das uns informiert, aber nicht unsere Aufmerksamkeit erfordert“. Die Interaktion zwischen Technologie und Mensch soll so gestaltet sein, dass sie in der Peripherie stattfindet und nicht im Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit steht.

Air

Air makes gentle gusts of wind. As I said, everything is still open. This could be about Air being positioned next to a plant to make its leaves move. In addition, Air can rotate and wiggle.

Air macht sanfte Windstöße. Wie gesagt, alles ist noch offen. Hier könnte es darum gehen, dass Air neben einer Pflanze positioniert wird, um ihre Blätter in Bewegung zu bringen. Außerdem kann sich Air drehen und wackeln.

Movement

Movement consists of seven rods that can be controlled individually to different heights. This could result in many notification possibilities. In addition, the individual rods can be pressed down to trigger an action.

Movement besteht aus sieben Stäben, die einzeln in verschiedene Höhen angesteuert werden können. Das könnte viele Benachrichtigungsmöglichkeiten ergeben. Außerdem lassen sich die einzelne Stäbe nach unten drücken, um eine Aktion auszulösen.

Rhythm

Rhythm is a speaker that emits very soft sounds. It is called "ambient sounds", where the melody indicates the quality of the information, such as importance or emergency. If you want to turn it off, you turn it over or run the flat of your hand over it.

Rhythm ist ein Lautsprecher, der sehr sanfte Töne von sich gibt. Man nennt es „ambient sounds“, wobei die Melodie die Qualität der Informationen angibt wie z.B. Wichtigkeit oder Notfall. Möchte man es abschalten, dreht man es um oder fährt mit der flachen Hand darüber.

Shadow

is the most subtle of the objects. It acts only with its shadow, which can change its size, grow or remain static. It shows its presence by breathing discreetly.

Shadow ist das subtilste der Objekte. Es agiert nur mit seinem Schatten, die ihre Größe verändern können, wachsen oder statisch bleiben. Es zeigt seine Präsenz durch dezentes Atmen.

Tap

Tap taps on the surface to indicate something to its owner. The strength can vary and the sound also depends on the surface, so positioning should be considered very carefully.

Tap klopft auf die Oberfläche, um seinen Besitzer auf etwas hinzuweisen. Die Stärke kann variieren und der Ton hängt auch vom Untergrund ab, weshalb man sich die Positionierung sehr gut überlegen sollte.

The Little Signals can be the basis for new technology concepts for the home. It is not known whether the devices will come onto the market in this form or whether the technologies will be integrated into other objects. So we can be curious about the possibilities that lie ahead in the field of Calm technology.

Die Little Signals können die Grundlage für neue Technologiekonzepte fürs Zuhause sein. Nicht bekannt ist, ob die Geräte in dieser Form auf den Markt kommen oder in die Technologien in andere Objekte integriert werden. Man kann also gespannt sein, welche Möglichkeiten in dem Bereich der Calm Technologie auf uns zukommen werden.
