New Exhibition at Van Gogh Museum: Golden Boy Gustav Klimt

7 October 2022 to 8 January 2023

Gustav Klimt is known throughout the world for his paintings of gold and decorative ornaments, his universal symbolism and his images of strong women. But where did he get his inspiration?

The Golden Boy Gustav Klimt exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to see Klimt's art alongside the works of the many artists who inspired him, including Van Gogh, Rodin and Matisse.

Klimt's work is rarely on loan, but this autumn masterpieces from around the world will travel to Amsterdam. This is the largest retrospective of Klimt's work ever organised in the Netherlands. Works such as Emilie Flöge (1902) and Water Snakes II (1904) will be on public view for the first time in the exhibition, which was created in collaboration with the Belvedere in Vienna.

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was one of the most important artists of fin-de-siècle imperial Vienna. The exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum is based on new research and features internationally renowned works by Klimt alongside those of other famous artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Whistler, Sargent, Toorop, Monet, Rodin, Toulouse-Lautrec and Matisse.

The exhibition shows how Klimt was inspired by this art before creating his very own style. The exhibition focuses on Klimt's enormous stylistic development: from the classical portrait of the pianist Pembaur from his early years (1890) to Adele Bloch-Bauer II (1912) and Eugenia Primavesi (1913), two explosions of colour inspired by Van Gogh and Matisse.

The exhibition features iconic works such as Judith (1901) and the painting The Bride, which was left unfinished on the easel at Klimt's death in 1918. As well as the famous portrait of Klimt's beloved muse Emilie Flöge. Also the painting Water Snakes II, on public display for the first time since the 1960s.

Long road to the opening of the museum

The artist Vincent Van Gogh was unknown during his lifetime and could hardly sell any works of art. He was often under psychiatric treatment and died in 1890 at the age of only 37. However, he had been highly productive and left his brother Theo a collection of 900 paintings and 1100 drawings. One year after his brother, Theo also died. His widow Johanna van Gogh-Bogner organised the first exhibitions, which became very successful. After Johanna's death, her son Vincent Willem inherited the Van Gogh collection in 1925. Vincent Willem founded the Van Gogh Foundation in 1960 and handed over the collection to it. The paintings were permanently exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum until the Van Gogh Museum opened in 1973.

The Van Gogh Museum has an extensive collection of 200 paintings, 500 drawings and 750 written documents from all of Van Gogh's creative periods.

The Van Gogh Museum is one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands. It is located in the Museumsplein, not far from the Imperial Museum. In the immediate vicinity are the two art museums, the Stedelijk Museum and the Rijksmuseum. The Van Gogh Museum houses the world's largest collection of Van Gogh paintings. Incidentally, the museum does not only contain works by Van Gogh, but also by painters, some of them friends, from the same era. They include Toulouse-Lautrec, Claude Monet and Paul Gauguin.
