Düsseldorf, 14. November 2022: Beim Circular Valley® Forum in Wuppertal werden am 18. November 2022 rund 600 Gäste aus Wirtschaft, Politik, Forschung und Zivilgesellschaft zusammenkommen, um mit hochkarätigen Rednern zu diskutieren. Themen sind die Herausforderungen der Transformation hin zu einer Circular Economy und deren Lösungen. Alethea Magazine erhielt ein Interview von Dr. Carsten Gerhardt, Gründungsmitglied, des vom NRW Wirtschaftsministerium unterstützten Circular Valley®

Das Circular Valley® ist eine Initiative, die Rhein-Ruhr Metropole als globales Zentrum für die Kreislaufwirtschaft auszubauen. Beim Namen orientierte man sich am Silicon Valley und dessen Aufstieg. Die Region Rhein-Ruhr ist nach Dr. Carsten Gerhardt als Standort ideal, da es die größte Metropolregion Europas ist, mit einer sehr großen Dichte an Weltmarktführern und Forschungsinstitutionen. Das Circular Valley® gibt es erst seit 1,5 Jahren, aber es konnte bereits über 60 Firmen helfen, Lösungen für die Kreislaufwirtschaft zu entwickeln. Die Circular Valley® Stiftung betreibt außerdem mit der Circular Economy Accelerator GmbH ein Accelerator-Programm zur Förderung von Start-up Unternehmen.

Ein Gast aus der Kunst:

Ein besonderer Gast der Veranstaltung wird auch HA Schult sein, weltbekannter Umwelt-Aktivist und Künstler, der einige seiner Trash People Figuren mitbringen wird. Dr. Carsten Gerhardt ist besonders stolz darauf, dass das Circular Valley® damit in einer Reihe mit den berühmten weltweiten Schauplätzen der Trash People steht, wie z. B. den Pyramiden von Gizah, der Chinesischen Mauer, und Matura in 2019.

Kreislaufwirtschaft ist in aller Munde, aber Lösungen werden ganz selten in einer so großen Runde wie beim Circular Valley® erörtert. Artist Talk - HA Schult und Christa Steinle - Wir können die Gedanken der Menschen beeinflussen, aber nicht ihr Tun. HA Schult am 18. November beim Circular Valley in Wuppertal.

Alethea Magazine hat die Ehre, einen Artist-Talk wiederzugeben, den HA Schult mit der österreichischen Kunsthistorikerin und damaligen Direktorin des Grazer Joanneum Museums, Dr. Christa Steinle am 7.10.2006 im Palais Herberstein führte.

Alethea Magazine: Wie ist es zu der Gründung des Circular Valley gekommen und was konnten Sie bislang erreichen? Arbeiten Sie mit der Wirtschaft oder Institutionen zusammen?

Dr. Carsten Gerhardt: Das Circular Valley ist als Antwort auf die Frage entstanden, was wir in der erweiterten Rhein-Ruhr-Region den weltweit steigenden Emissionen entgegensetzen können. Wir sind die größte Metropolregion Europas mit einer einmaligen Dichte an Weltmarktführern und Forschungsinstitutionen. Das sind ideale Voraussetzungen, um hier mit dem Circular Valley für die Kreislaufwirtschaft das zu werden, was das Silicon Valley für die Digitalökonomie ist.

Um die Transformation von einer linearen zu einer zirkulären Wirtschaftsweise zu forcieren, arbeiten wir intensiv mit der Wirtschaft zusammen und stehen im engen Austausch mit Politik und Wissenschaft. Zudem bieten wir in unterschiedlichen Formaten Projekte mit der und für die Zivilgesellschaft an.

Seit unserer Gründung vor rund anderthalb Jahren sind mehr als 60 internationale Startups bei uns im Circular Valley gewesen. Gemeinsam mit unseren Partnern haben sie ihre Lösungen für die Kreislaufwirtschaft weiterentwickelt. Ebenso hatten viele der Startups die Gelegenheit, im persönlichen Austausch, ihre Ideen mit Bundesentwicklungsministerin Svenja Schulze und NRW-Wirtschaftsministerin Mona Neubaur zu diskutieren.

Alethea Magazine: Können Sie mir etwas zu Ihrer Kooperation mit HA Schult erzählen, der ja mit seinen Trash-People zu Ihrem Forum am 18. November kommt?

Dr. Carsten Gerhardt: HA Schult hat als einer der ersten Künstler überhaupt auf das Problem der Vermüllung unseres Planeten aufmerksam gemacht und seine Trash-People an zahlreichen Stellen in der Welt als Mahnmal inszeniert. Für uns ist es eine große Ehre, dass er nun beim Circular Valley Forum mit seinen Trash-People zu Gast ist und das Circular Valley künftig in einer Reihe mit den berühmten Schauplätzen seiner Kunst steht. Damit schließt sich in gewisser Weise auch ein Kreis.

Alethea Magazine: Weshalb ist sein Werk wichtig für Ihre Bewegung? Welche Rolle kommt Kunst bei der Nachhaltigkeits-Bewegung Ihrer Meinung nach zu?

Dr. Carsten Gerhardt: Zum einen veranschaulichen HA Schults Trash-People die großen Mengen Müll, die jeder einzelne von uns verursacht. Zum anderen zeigen die Trash People auch, dass aus Abfällen etwas Neues entstehen kann. Dieser Gedanke spiegelt das Prinzip der Kreislaufwirtschaft exzellent wider, weil nicht zu vermeidende Abfälle als Rohstoffe für neue Produkte genutzt werden.

Ganz grundsätzlich kann Kunst im Bereich Nachhaltigkeit eine große Rolle spielen. Kunst kann sowohl auf Missstände und Probleme aufmerksam machen als auch Visionen und Lösungen einer großen Öffentlichkeit näherbringen.

Alethea Magazine: Auf welche Programmpunkte und Highlights kann man sich beim Forum am 18. November freuen?

Dr. Carsten Gerhardt: Neben der bereits genannten Ausstellung von HA Schults Trash-People werden beim Forum rund 600 Gäste aus Wirtschaft, Politik, Forschung und Zivilgesellschaft zusammenkommen. Gemeinsam werden sie die Herausforderungen der Transformation hin zu einer Circular Economy und Lösungen in verschiedenen Runden diskutieren. Kreislaufwirtschaft ist natürlich ein regelmäßiges Thema in bilateralen Gesprächen und normalen Konferenzen. Aber in einer so großen Runde wie beim Circular Valley mit so vielen Entscheider:innen und Expert:innen werden sie ganz selten erörtert. Zu unseren Gästen zählen NRW-Ministerpräsident Hendrik Wüst, Landeswirtschaftsministerin Mona Neubaur, Umweltminister Oliver Krischer, der flämische Ministerpräsident Jan Jambon, der frühere Bundesumweltminister Prof. Dr. Klaus Töpfer sowie zahlreiche CEOs und Vorstände aus Dax-Unternehmen, wichtigen Mittelständlern und großen Forschungseinrichtungen.

Alethea Magazine: Können Sie auch etwas über Ihre anstehenden Projekte verraten?

Dr. Carsten Gerhardt: Zunächst freuen uns wir uns sehr auf das große Forum am 18. November. Parallel dazu, laufen bereits die Vorbereitungen für die vierte Runde unseres Accelerator-Programms für internationale Startups, das Ende dieses Jahres beginnt. Der Schwerpunkt der vierten Kohorte liegt auf dem Thema „Giga-Impact“. Das heißt: Die Startups werden in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Wirtschaft, Forschung und Politik Lösungen vorantreiben, die Emissionen im Giga-Tonnen-Bereich reduzieren können. Auf die Ergebnisse dieser Kooperationen sind wir schon sehr gespannt.

Düsseldorf, 14 November 2022: At the Circular Valley® Forum in Wuppertal on 18 November 2022, around 600 guests from business, politics, research and civil society will come together to discuss with top-class speakers. Topics will be the challenges of the transformation towards a Circular Economy and their solutions. Alethea Magazine received an interview from Dr. Carsten Gerhardt, founding member of Circular Valley®, which is supported by the NRW Ministry of Economics.

Circular Valley® is an initiative to develop the Rhine-Ruhr metropolis as a global centre for the circular economy. The name was inspired by Silicon Valley and its rise. According to Dr. Carsten Gerhardt, the Rhine-Ruhr region is ideal as a location because it is the largest metropolitan region in Europe, with a very high density of world market leaders and research institutions. Circular Valley® has only been around for 1.5 years, but it has already been able to help over 60 companies develop solutions for the circular economy. The Circular Valley® Foundation also runs the Circular Economy Accelerator GmbH, an accelerator programme to support start-up companies.

A special guest at the event will also be HA Schult, world-renowned environmental activist and artist, who will bring some of his Trash People characters. Dr Carsten Gerhardt is particularly proud that this puts Circular Valley® in line with famous global Trash People venues, such as the Pyramids of Gizah, the Great Wall of China, and Matura in 2019.

Alethea Magazine: How did Circular Valley come about and what have you been able to achieve so far? Do you work together with the business community or institutions?

Dr. Carsten Gerhardt: Circular Valley came into being in response to the question of what we in the extended Rhine-Ruhr region can do to counteract the rising emissions worldwide. We are the largest metropolitan region in Europe with a unique density of world market leaders and research institutions. These are ideal conditions to become here with the Circular Valley for the circular economy what Silicon Valley is for the digital economy.

In order to push the transformation from a linear to a circular economy, we work intensively with the business community and are in close exchange with politics and science. In addition, we offer projects with and for civil society in various formats.

Since our founding about one and a half years ago, more than 60 international start-ups have joined us in Circular Valley. Together with our partners, they have further developed their solutions for the circular economy. Likewise, many of the start-ups had the opportunity to discuss their ideas in personal exchanges with Federal Development Minister Svenja Schulze and NRW Economics Minister Mona Neubaur.

Alethea Magazine: Can you tell me something about your cooperation with HA Schult, who is coming to your forum on 18 November with his Trash People?

Dr. Carsten Gerhardt: HA Schult was one of the first artists to draw attention to the problem of littering our planet and has staged his Trash People as a memorial in numerous places around the world. It is a great honour for us that he is now a guest at the Circular Valley Forum with his Trash People and that the Circular Valley will in future be in a row with the famous locations of his art. In a way, this also closes a circle.

Alethea Magazine: Why is his work important for your movement? What do you think is the role of art in the sustainability movement?

Dr. Carsten Gerhardt: On the one hand, HA Schul's Trash People illustrate the large amounts of waste that each and every one of us creates. On the other hand, the Trash People also show that something new can be created from waste. This idea excellently reflects the principle of the circular economy, because waste that cannot be avoided is used as raw material for new products.

In principle, art can play a major role in the field of sustainability. Art can both draw attention to grievances and problems and bring visions and solutions closer to a large public.

Alethea Magazine: What programme items and highlights can you look forward to at the Forum on 18 November?

Dr. Carsten Gerhardt: In addition to the aforementioned exhibition by HA Schul's Trash People, the Forum will bring together around 600 guests from business, politics, research and civil society. Together they will discuss the challenges of the transformation towards a Circular Economy and solutions in various rounds. The circular economy is, of course, a regular topic in bilateral talks and normal conferences. But they are rarely discussed in such a large group as at Circular Valley, with so many decision-makers and experts. Our guests include NRW Minister President Hendrik Wüst, NRW Minister of Economics Mona Neubaur, Minister of the Environment Oliver Krischer, Flemish Minister President Jan Jambon, former Federal Minister of the Environment Prof. Dr. Klaus Töpfer, as well as numerous CEOs and board members from DAX companies, important medium-sized enterprises and large research institutions.

Alethea Magazine: Can you also reveal something about your upcoming projects?

Dr. Carsten Gerhardt: First of all, we are very much looking forward to the big forum on 18 November. Parallel to that, preparations are already underway for the fourth round of our Accelerator Programme for international start-ups, which begins at the end of this year. The focus of the fourth cohort is on the topic of "Giga-Impact". This means that the startups will work closely with business, research and politics to advance solutions that can reduce emissions in the giga tonne range. We are already very excited about the results of these cooperations.
