Düsseldorf, 13 November 2022: The IFAN National Museum - Musée Thédore Monod d'Art Africain - in Dakar, Senegal, one of the most important museums in West Africa, is showing "Von Fernen umgeben / Entouré de Lointains", the travelling exhibition by German TV star and artist Dieter Nuhr. It consists of 40 unique works with landscapes and portraits. In his works, Dieter Nuhr deals with the themes of strangeness and familiarity, distance and proximity, with the Ruhr region, where he was born and grew up, playing an important role. 

Now the artworks travel from the Ruhr region out into the world. Dieter Nuhr himself explains: "My pictures essentially come from distant worlds. It is nice that they themselves travel to faraway places in my exhibitions. They are combined with pictures from my home, the Rhine-Ruhr area. In this way, near and far are mixed. An exhibition of my paintings shows the world in the blur of memory. My pictures take stock of a reality that is fading in our minds, they capture what cannot be stopped. They counter the utilitarian terror of the world (and recently also in art ...) with the subjectivity of the individual world view." 

"Dieter Nuhr's art is deeply marked by travel, encounter and discovery. For the artist is a surveyor of the world, a nomad in perpetual transit. His photographic work is a reflection of this mobility," says El Hadji Malick Ndiaye, curator of the exhibition. Dieter Nuhr also intends to look for new motifs in Senegal and paint new works of art at home in his studio in Düsseldorf, Oberkassel: "Of course, I will be in Senegal myself and collect new pictures while travelling, which will then, after processing, go on the road again myself. This is how the circle closes and opens again ...".

The exhibition is sponsored by the Brost Foundation and organised by the Association for Art in Public, Dirk Geuer, the Institut fondamental d'Afrique noire Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar and the YOU Foundation. Patron of the exhibition is His Excellency the German Ambassador Sönke Siemon.

Düsseldorf, 13. November 2022: Das IFAN Nationalmuseum - Musée Thédore Monod d’Art Africain - in Dakar, Senegal, eines der bedeutendsten Museen Westafrikas, zeigt „Von Fernen umgeben / Entouré de Lointains“, die Wanderausstellung des deutschen TV-Stars und Künstlers Dieter Nuhr. Es handelt sich um 40 Unikate mit Landschaften und Portraits. Dieter Nuhr beschäftigt sich in seinen Arbeiten mit den Themen Fremde und Vertrautheit, Ferne und Nähe, wobei das Ruhrgebiet, wo er geboren und aufgewachsen ist, eine wichtige Rolle spielt. 

Jetzt reisen die Kunstwerke vom Ruhrgebiet hinaus in die Welt. Dieter Nuhr führt hierzu selbst aus: „Meine Bilder stammen im Wesentlichen aus fernen Welten. Es ist schön, dass sie in meinen Ausstellungen selber in die Ferne reisen. Sie werden mit Bildern aus meiner Heimat, dem Rhein-Ruhr-Gebiet kombiniert. So vermischen sich nah und fern. Eine Ausstellung meiner Bilder zeigt die Welt im Verschwimmen der Erinnerung. Meine Bilder sind Bestandsaufnahmen einer in unseren Köpfen verlöschenden Wirklichkeit, sie halten fest, was nicht aufzuhalten ist. Sie stellen dem Nützlichkeitsterror der Welt (und neuerdings auch in der Kunst …) die Subjektivität der individuellen Weltsicht entgegen.“ 

„Dieter Nuhrs Kunst ist tief geprägt von Reisen, Begegnung und Entdeckung. Denn der Künstler ist ein Vermesser der Welt, ein Nomade auf der ewigen Durchreise. Sein fotografisches Werk ist ein Spiegelbild dieser Mobilität“, so El Hadji Malick Ndiaye, Kurator der Ausstellung. Dieter Nuhr beabsichtigt auch, im Senegal nach neuen Motiven zu suchen und daheim in seinem Atelier in Düsseldorf, Oberkassel, neue Kunstwerke zu malen: „Ich werde natürlich selbst im Senegal dabei sein und auf Reisen wieder neue Bilder einsammeln, die dann, nach Verarbeitung, selbst wieder auf Reise gehen. So schließt sich der Kreis und öffnet sich wieder …“.

Die Ausstellung wird von der Brost-Stiftung gefördert und von der Association for Art in Public, Dirk Geuer, dem Institut fondamental d’Afrique noire Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar sowie der YOU-Stiftung organisiert. Schirmherr der Ausstellung ist seine Exzellenz der deutsche Botschafter Sönke Siemon.
