Avant-garde and style

are the attributes that apply to the fashion of Annette Görtz, one of the best-known German designers and fashion entrepreneurs based in the Rhine metropolis. After more than 30 years, the designer from Gütersloh has passed on part of the responsibility to her son Maximilian Welsch in 2021. In Düsseldorf on Sunday 29 January, she was presented with the Mode Business Award for her influence on Germany's fashion industry. Under the motto "Next Generation", Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller and Angelika Firnrohr, Managing Director of Fashion Net, welcomed around 160 top-class, national and international guests to the festive award ceremony in Düsseldorf's in-location "The Paradise Now"

The award, which was developed by the Fashion Net Düsseldorf association in 2015, honours fashion business innovators who have distinguished themselves through their commitment to the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. The laudatory speech was held by Christiane Arp, former editor-in-chief of VOGUE, chairwoman of the Fashion Council Germany and companion of Annette Görtz. For Düsseldorf's Lord Mayor Dr Stephan Keller, her commitment and enthusiasm for Düsseldorf as a location was decisive. Angelika Firnrohr, Managing Director of Fashion Net, added: "I am very pleased that fashion is still alive here in Düsseldorf and that many renowned players from the fashion and retail industry have come together to present the Fashion Business Award and give the award a worthy setting. The award is unique in Germany to date, as it not only honours renowned German designers, but also demonstrates the importance of Düsseldorf as a fashion location".

In 2021, Wunderwerk founder Heiko Wunder was the award winner, in 2020 designer Thomas Rath was honoured. Previous winners were Marc Cain in 2019, Breuninger in 2018, Steffen Schraut in 2017, Evelyn Hammerström in 2016 and Gerry Weber in 2015.

Annette Görtz brand is considered one of the most renowned German fashion brands. After graduating from the University of Applied Sciences in Bielefeld, the designer went into business for herself in 1984. Later, together with her husband Hans-Jörg Welsch, she built the brand into an international luxury label. Their joint son, 31-year-old Maximilian Welsch, is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Fashion in Antwerp and has known the company since childhood. The fashion company has agencies in Amsterdam, London, Zurich, Barcelona, New York and Sydney with hundreds of outlets. Düsseldorf is still their base, she says, as they are supported by the city of Düsseldorf. The company Annette Görtz runs its own retail store MILIAN on Königsallee, and sells international labels such as Dries van Noten, Issey Miyake, Jil Sander and Maison Margiela in addition to its own brand.

HA Schult's Trash People at the Circular Valley Forum in Wuppertal on 18 November 2022."Check the thing you want to throw away and don't give it away. It is the mirror of yourself. Don't betray your soul." 600 decision-makers from business and politics came together, including environmental activists from the early days such as HA Schult and former Federal Environment Minister Klaus Töpfer, described by the Forum as the "father of the circular economy". The participants were surprised by the Trash People, many of whom had never seen the artworks up close before. But the performance also shows what role artists play. They are not among the decision-makers, but art has the power to unite and emotionalise people, as it did on this evening.
