Düsseldorf, February 14, 2023: Kati Schön is known to many people as the Shopping Queen and is a welcome glamorous guest at events in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area. In this exclusive interview, she talks about how to succeed as an influencer, even in a city with a lot of competition, like the fashion city of Düsseldorf. Katie Schön also uses her fame to expand her own brand. She has been making her own jewelry for years, mostly for her friends. She will now expand her own label via her successful social media presence. There is already an online store, her own studio in Gerresheim. And you can look forward to her further plans as well.

How long have you been designing jewelry?
After my studies in textile engineering in Aachen, first I worked as an area manager and in visual merchandising for textile companies like H&M, Stefanel, New Yorker. That was a lot of work, because sales and personnel, everything had to be right. Then for the last 14 years I worked in theater; as marketing and sales manager marketing and sales at Capital Theater, Musical Dome Cologne and Starlight Express. Then also at the
Apollo Varieté Essen and most recently at the Theater und Konzerthaus Solingen. Also in the context of an EU project in Castle Burg.
About 9 years ago I started to design jewelry as a hobby, which I sold to my friends. This was so successful that I opened an online store as well as a studio in Gerresheim to present the jewelry. The studio was only open on Saturday because I worked during the week. It was also supposed to be a place where people could meet and exchange ideas, and they were served coffee and cake on the side.
Personal Branding
Corona changed everything, and since the theater was also closed, I started doing social media. I quickly began to learn a lot about this. I worked on my technical skills, how to film or take pictures, everything had to be perfect.
Many influencers make jewelry and clothes, but in the end it's the person that matters; people want to know who the person is behind it. Many think that influencer work is very easy, but it's hard work.
Shopping Queen
Shopping Queen 2021 helped me become better known in Düsseldorf. Because of Corona, people were at home watching the show, which aired at 3:00 pm. Afterwards I had an incredible amount of orders and all the jewelry I wore in the show was bought.
I also got a lot of requests about my styling and so I created the hashtag #lookchangekati. With a suit and jewelry for example, you can change a lot, you can either go to work or go out in the evening. I watched the reactions and realized that I need to be exceptionally dressed at events, because that's when these posts got the most attention.
What are your goals today?
Of course I want to make my jewelry more known and also work more as a stylist. I find that with jewelry you can enjoy life more and create joie de vivre for yourself. You can learn to attract attention with jewelry and enjoy the looks.
Do you plan to launch your jewelry in stores as well?
Not at the moment, because my unique selling point is that each piece is one of a kind; there are no mass-produced items.
How is your jewelry made?
I buy the components at various trade fairs in Germany and abroad, such as at Inhorgenta in Munich and from an Afghan stone dealer in Düsseldorf. I only use real stones and use silver because of the cost. The turquoise ring I wear today costs Euro 220. Another time I bought a cameo necklace at a flea market and reworked it. I also find a lot at antique markets that I rework into my own jewelry.
I also like asymmetry very much, this makes the jewelry interesting.
Are you a goldsmith yourself?
Through my mechanical engineering studies I learned many skills. Many parts, like the clasps, you don't need to make them yourself, you can buy them inexpensively. It depends on the combination of parts.
Starting from scratch
An important question for readers, too: What is it like to be an influencer in Düsseldorf?
I started from scratch. I wasn't with an influencer agency and tried to be involved in various events myself. At some point I had so much movement on my Instagram account that many agencies asked me for events. Also, Düsseldorf is small so you meet the same people and you will stay in that circle. For me, events are very important to build my network. Some companies book me, some just invite me.
Did your success as an influencer and then as a jewelry designer bring envy and resentment here in our city?
Maybe I've been lucky so far. I'm a down-to-earth person, and I don't play a role. Even if I wear great clothes, I am always who I am. Of course, there is resentment among some women, but it is also normal and I can bear it well.
Good, then I am glad. Dear Kati, thank you and good luck.
