Düsseldorf, 9-October 2022: The Palais Galliera celebrates Frida Kahlo (July 6, 1907-July 13, 1954), who was one of the most recognized and influential artists of the 20th century. The exhibition Frida Kahlo, Au-delà des apparences offers visitors a glimpse into the artist's very private life and traces how, through the way she presented and portrayed herself, she created an identity that is revered throughout the world to this day. After a serious accident at the age of 18, Frida began to paint. She also wore traditional clothing to show her Mexican heritage, but also to emphasize her disability. Her entire appearance was designed like a manifesto. Her work had an influence not only on art, but on contemporary fashion designers such as Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Riccardo Tisci, Givenchy, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior or Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garçons, whose works are also shown in the exhibition.

In collaboration with the Museo Frida Kahlo, the exhibition features more than 200 objects from Casa Azul, the house where Frida was born and grew up: clothes, accessories, cosmetics, such as a Chanel perfume, personal letters, medicines; even a medical prosthesis. These personal items were rediscovered after the death of the artist in 1954 by her husband Diego Rivera, sealed and in 2004. It is a very valuable collection - including traditional Tehuana dresses, pre-Columbian necklaces. The collection is staged together with designer dresses. Düsseldorf, 9-Oktober 2022: Das Palais Galliera zelebriert Frida Kahlo (6. Juli 1907-13. Juli 1954), die eine der anerkanntesten und einflussreichsten Künstlerinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts war. Die Ausstellung Frida Kahlo, Au-delà des apparences bietet den Besuchern einen Einblick in das ganz private Leben der Künstlerin und zeichnet nach, wie sie sich durch die Art und Weise, wie sie sich selbst präsentiert und darstellt, eine Identität geschaffen hat, die bis heute in der ganzen Welt verehrt wird. Nach einem schweren Unfall im Alter von 18 Jahren begann Frida zu malen. Außerdem trug sie traditionelle Kleidung, um ihre mexikanische Herkunft zu zeigen, aber auch ihre Behinderung zu betonen. Ihre gesamtes Auftreten war wie ein Manifest gestaltet. Ihr Werk hatte nicht nur Einfluss auf die Kunst, sondern auf die zeitgenössischen Modedesigner wie Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Riccardo Tisci, Givenchy, Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior oder Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garçons, deren Werke auch in der Ausstellung gezeigt werden.

In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Museo Frida Kahlo zeigt die Ausstellung mehr als 200 Gegenstände aus der Casa Azul, dem Haus, in dem Frida geboren wurde und aufwuchs: Kleidung, Accessoires, Kosmetika, wie ein Chanel Parfum, persönliche Briefe, Medikamente; sogar eine medizinische Prothese. Diese persönlichen Gegenstände wurden nach dem Tod der Künstlerin 1954 von ihrem Ehemann Diego Rivera, versiegelt und im Jahr 2004, wiederentdeckt. Es handelt sich um eine sehr wertvolle Sammlung - darunter traditionelle Tehuana-Kleider, präkolumbianische Halsketten. Die Sammlung ist zusammen mit Designer Kleidern inszeniert. Her influence as a muse in the history of fashion memory has been continually re-evaluated by contemporary designers who have used the various symbols of Frida Kahlo's identity as a source of inspiration to create a visual repertoire that addresses themes of trauma, disability, ethnicity, sexual identity and politics. Featured designers include: Jean Paul Gaultier, Yohji Yamamoto, Maria Grazia Chiuri for Dior, Alexander McQueen for Givenchy, Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons, Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel.
