Dusseldorf, 20 September 2022: Alberta Whittle's Lagareh's film The Last Born, which premiered at the 2022 Venice Biennale, returns to Scotland. The film focuses on Scotland's historical links to the transatlantic slave trade and highlights the strength of contemporary black women in Europe, West Africa and the Caribbean. These geographical areas formed a 'triangular route' during the colonial era.

Viewers of the film can reflect on the traumatic legacy of slavery and its potential impact on policing and incarceration today. The premiere kicked off a tour of six Scottish cinemas.

Alberta Whittle's commissioned work is currently representing Scotland at La Biennale di Venezia at Arsenale Docks, S. Pietro di Castello. The National Galleries of Scotland will host a solo presentation of Alberta's work in Spring 2023, which will explore her practice in depth and also feature works from the Venice exhibition. Commissioned by the Scotland+Venice Partnership and Forma, LUX Scotland, with support from the Art Fund, will tour six venues across Scotland from September 2022 to March 2023, each hosting a programme of invited speakers.
