Dusseldorf, 26.9. 2022: Mohammad Barrangi Fashtami: Woman, Life, Freedom: The award-winning Iranian artist and Paralympics athlete Mohammad Barrangi publishes his women's artwork in connection with the terrible unrest in Iran. In a message today to Alethea, he writes:

The main characters of my work have always been women. The women of my land, Iran...And this work is a girl dancing and a crown on her head...This picture is a symbol of freedom for me and maybe for all of us... Maybe I am more happy to see my work on social pages than the courage of myself and my compatriots. I am happy that the women of Iran and the women of the world all joined hands and revived this courage and strength in us men and even the world.

About his art

Mohammad Barrangi Fashtami's works combine elements of Persian calligraphy, storytelling, text and a touch of humor. Using modern printing techniques, traditional calligraphy, and handmade paper, Barrangi Fashtami's finished works mimic ancient manuscripts in color and texture.

---

Barrangi Fashtami, who was born without the use of his left arm, works on the floor and uses his feet to stabilize his work. His works reflect his own experiences as an artist with a disability and often feature images of people with lost limbs or other disabilities, as well as images of women he admires.

Mohammad Barrangi Fashtami: "I always say I live in a wonderland where anything is possible. You don't need a passport to travel to my world. Everyone lives in a common world and a common country. In my world, the animals speak. People and animals have a common nature - a combination of human and animal. And in my world all the heroes are women. I like to depict images of my mother, exiled Iranian queens or simply friends who mean a lot to me. I often combine them with animals or mythical creatures, because my work is often about travel and immigration. Sometimes I also combine elements from classical Western painting with Eastern stories or images."

The artist

Mohammad Barrangi Fashtami was born in Rasht, Iran, in 1988 and now lives in London. He is both an artist and a medal-winning international track and field athlete with a disability in his left hand. Barrangi Fashtami represented Iran internationally as a sprinter in the Paralympics in the 100- and 200-meter races. After studying art, he turned to book illustration and graduated from Islamic Azad University of Tonekabon in 2011 with a major in graphic design. He also earned an MA from the Royal Drawing School. In addition to international exhibitions, his work is included in the Royal Family Collection, the British Museum Collection, and the San Diego Museum of Art Collection.
